Los Alamos National Laboratory Utilities Engineering Undergraduate Student in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The Engineering Undergraduate Student (UGS) Program offers paid semester and year-round Co-op opportunities for undergraduate students in a variety ofEngineering subfields supporting the Utilities & Institutional Facilities Division (UI-DO). The program provides mentoring, hands-on technical experience, and professional development opportunities through a formalized work plan complementing the student’s chosen area of study.

As an UGS Co-op Engineer, you will support technical resources that support utilities, plant and system engineering, project/design engineering services, maintenance support, configuration management, and safety, while ensuring compliance with conduct of engineering program requirements. In addition, you will work closely with system and facility engineers, design engineers, designers, drafters, and support staff; as well as project engineers from the Engineering Project Delivery Group.

Responsibilities for the UGS Co-op Engineer will include: execution of engineering work required to support operations and maintenance activities within the UI-DO organization; and providing long-range system planning and forecasting to ensure facility and system viability and reliability.

UGS Co-op Engineer Professional Exposure:

  • Collaborate with high-level technical expertise in system engineering, project engineering, project management or design engineering.

  • Gain knowledge in design development processes and configuration management.

  • Learn about process for managing design change implementation

  • Collaborate with a matrixed team of subject matter experts to develop technical bases for financial planning.

  • Work within multidiscipline engineering teams with a large portfolio of engineering design tasks in a production and/or operational facility environment. Tasks may include energy use audits, annual facility system health reports, structure system and component upgrade project planning, development and execution.

  • Hands on experience with engineering, operations, and maintenance of utility systems, such as potable water, sanitary wastewater, reverse osmosis water reclamation, electrical power and transmission, steam generation, steam distribution, natural gas distribution, storm water management, traffic planning, and/or roads.

  • Gain a broad knowledge of industry/regulatory codes and standards, engineering procedures, project controls, and design criteria in a variety of engineering disciplines.

  • Develop communication skills across all levels of management and customers.

  • Learn to grow technical and team building capabilities.

  • Exposure to facility operations including business development, legal, procurement, construction, maintenance, environmental safety and health (ES&H), and quality assurance.

  • Experience working on issues of diverse scope where analysis of situations or data require evaluation of a variety of factors.

Examples of LANL projects in UI Division include, but are not limited to:

● Facility design, safe basis, programmatic and/or major equipment installation.

● Design, analysis and testing of complex systems and structures for operations and maintenance applications.

● Sustainability focused design for all utility and facility projects. This can include HVAC upgrades, LED lighting, building automation system (BAS) controls, permeable pavement, storm water design, photovoltaics and more.

● Building, testing, and commissioning facility and infrastructure portfolio utilizing alternative project delivery methods (APDM) construction management

The position is located in Los Alamos, NM.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

● Education/Experience: Currently enrolled in an ABET-accredited Bachelor’s Degree program in any Engineering discipline. Examples of engineering degrees in greatest demand include: Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, Civil and Environmental.

● Enrolled in at least 12 semester credit hours (or full-time equivalent), or enrollment in a university Co-op or practicum. Entering freshmen must provide documentation indicating matriculation into a suitable undergraduate degree program.

● Must currently have and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent).

Desired Qualifications:

Student selected for UGS Co-op in the Utilities & Institutional Facilities Division are most competitive when they possess the following knowledge and skills:

● Experience with and broad knowledge of electrical utility system engineering and maintenance: e.g. medium voltage electrical distribution systems, medium voltage electrical protective devices, electrical generation, North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) compliance requirements, power factor correction, SCADA, and medium voltage design and maintenance requirements.

● Knowledge of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and managing information.

● Knowledge of Engineering Standards Manual and Conduct of Engineering procedures.

● Advanced or accredited program.

● Computer programming in support of engineering design, data acquisition, analysis or machine learning;

● Testing techniques currently used within your selected specific engineering field(s);

● Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) experience;

● Experience in additive manufacturing;

● Demonstrated ability to communicate (verbal and written) well in a professional scientific context; and

● Commitment to achieving results in a complex social and organizational setting.
