What You Will Do
Due to continuous demand in support of the Nuclear Emergency Response mission and other program areas, the Technology Applications group (A-3) is searching for an excellent candidate who is interested in making a difference to national security. The ideal R&D Engineer will have in-depth experience with capacitive discharge systems coupled with a broad knowledge base and interest across a breadth of electrical engineering R&D focus areas described below. The selected individual will immediately contribute to design, hardware, and integration deliverables; support customer-training needs; and collaborate on new R&D initiatives. Research will be conducted at Q and SCI levels within the Group, which consists of approximately 50 full-time staff from various educational backgrounds including electrical and mechanical engineers, designers, technicians, physicists, and students spread across multiple technical areas and within a variety of laboratory spaces and field environments. Additionally, this staff member will also collaborate with other groups, divisions, and directorates supporting this broad mission space.
The Technology Applications Group (A-3) uses a broad range of engineering and scientific expertise to support nuclear counter proliferation (NCP), nuclear counter terrorism (NCT), nuclear emergency response (ER) missions, defense, intelligence, and emerging technologies. A-3 has a very diverse customer and program base. The Group contributes to national programs intended to protect, deter, and respond to weapons of mass destruction through tailored training and by using specialized applied electromagnetic solutions, designing/building/testing/delivering tools and trainers along with novel safing technologies, RF solutions, and cyberphysical applications. This position will require you to work across multiple technical areas (TA’s) at Los Alamos and collaborate accordingly with a wide variety of staff and customer sets.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Electrical Engineering Expertise: Experience with high voltage and capacitive discharge systems (firesets), low voltage sensor and trigger systems (PIR’s, magnetic switches make/break screens, proximity sensors, optical detection, timers, geolocation). Knowledge related to fast triggers, HV relays, DC/DC converters, novel energy charge/storage/discharge schemes, and charge state detection or determination. Experience with diagnostic tools, signal timing and energy discharge, and catastrophic failure/consequences of such systems.
Design: Experience withelectrical circuit design, simulation, PCB layout, and signal analysis tools. Thorough knowledge of and experience with design & analysis tools such as simulation tools, electromagnetic design tools, schematic capture, printed circuit board layout and signal integrity analysis tools.
Teaming & Training: Demonstrated ability to motivate and work as part of a team must also have the ability to work independently. Proven ability to instruct and/or train partners ontailored subset of technical information.Experience providing technical peer review, contributing ideas for new proposals and business development opportunities.
Diagnostic & Program Knowledge: Demonstrated knowledge and experience with related diagnostic tools, signal timing and energy discharge, and catastrophic failure/consequences of such systems. Prior experience with programming and integration of microcontrollers/microprocessors such as Arduino, Raspberry Pi, and similar.
Communication & Collaboration: Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Strong interpersonal skills when working with internal and external customers. Experience working interactively with line management, sponsors, and program managers to include cost estimating, scope monitoring, and milestone tracking.
Education/Experience :Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering in Electrical Engineering or related discapline from an ABET accredited institution and 4 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Field test execution of energetic materials experiments (imaging, sensors, safety,…)
ECM testing, equipment, and related effects
Environmental testing, packaging, and robust design considerations of fielded electronics
Design, synthesis, routing, simulation, testing, debugging, and technical documentation of circuits
Willingness and ability to support Emergency Response program as a future responder
Field communications, radiated emissions, shielding, detection, and similar
Cellular, WiFi, network communication protocol/technologies, and use in LANL facilities
Experience with AC Power supply (utility grid) and distribution subsystems and controls
Analog or Digital Design, RF/Microwave, and/or Embedded Systems
Demonstrated ability to take a design from concept thru prototype and field implementation either thru a team approach or individually when necessary.
Presently serving as an electrical safety officer or willingness to support such a future role.
Thorough understanding of LANL IWM including relevant Hazard Analysis, IWD development/implementation, and promoting an unquestionable safe working environment.
Active Q and SCI clearances
Location: This position will be physically located in Los Alamos, NM.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
