Los Alamos National Laboratory Technical Project Manager 3/4 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

Reporting to the High Performance Computing Project-Program Director, you will provide project management and leadership for the highest profile computing cluster and associated infrastructure deployments within HPC Division. HPC Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory translates computing industry trends into a robust high performance computing environment, including computing clusters, file systems, networks, visualization facilities, and archives, as well as power, cooling, and the facilities in which they are all housed. HPC Division also provides and maintains the user software environment enabling high performance computing, engages in R&D relevant to its core mission, and provides software engineering services to the broader Laboratory. HPC Division serves all Laboratory programs requiring a world-class high performance computing capability to enable solutions to complex problems of strategic national interest.

Technical Project Manager 3 $113,100 - $190,900

Technical Project Manager 3 duties:

  • Lead technical integration and deployment efforts within HPC division. Typical efforts within the division include computing cluster deployments, storage and networking infrastructure design and deployment, and scalable system software design and deployment.

  • Coordinate with other technical effort leaders, within HPC and across organizational boundaries, in executing simultaneous, overlapping HPC division efforts.

  • Coordinate with external vendors on hardware/software deliveries and deployments.

  • Establish and coordinate individual project requirements, scope, schedule, and appropriate resources with cross organizational line managers and multiple Programs.

  • Track and manage risk for individual HPC integration and deployment efforts.

  • Report progress to line and program management.

  • Along with other technical effort leaders, develop consistent processes for managing, integrating, and reporting on HPC Division efforts.

Technical Project Manager 4 $135,800 - $235,600

Technical Project Manager 4 (in addition to the duties outlined above) duties:

  • Personally lead the highest-profile, most strategic integration or deployment efforts, excluding power and cooling delivery efforts, within HPC Division. As an example, an immediate effort is the deployment of Crossroads, the next Advanced Technology System (ATS) computing cluster within the NNSA complex.

  • Oversee the management of multi-million dollar non-recurring engineering (NRE) efforts undertaken by vendor partners as part of HPC computing acquisitions.

  • Assist other technical leaders in establishing and coordinating appropriate requirements, scope, schedule, and resources with line and program management.

  • Assist other technical leaders in identifying and managing risk associated with conflicting needs and priorities across efforts.

  • Lead the development of consistent HPC processes for managing, integrating, and reporting on HPC Division deployment and integration efforts.

  • Assist line and program management with defining and scoping future HPC projects.

  • Mentor junior technical leaders in best practices for HPC integration and deployment management.

Job Requirements for a Technical Project Manager 3:

  • Advanced knowledge of and demonstrated experience in all aspects of project management of technical or operational work, including developing project plans, work breakdown structures, and work packages; managing to scope, schedule, budget, and technical baselines; and documenting baseline reports and change control actions.

  • Advanced knowledge of HPC clusters and associated infrastructure, excluding power and cooling infrastructure.

  • Advanced knowledge of the project management discipline.

  • Advanced knowledge of regulatory and Laboratory requirements related to project deployments.

  • Demonstrated experience successfully leading a major computing cluster deployment effort.

  • Demonstrated experience in developing and nurturing effective mid-level internal and external customers relationships.

  • Demonstrated ability to successfully plan, organize, lead, and monitor a variety of team efforts to completion.

  • Demonstrated experience effectively communicating and interacting with others at many levels, both verbal and written.

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with technical and non-technical staff to execute complex efforts against specific deadlines.

Additional Job Requirements for Technical Project Manager 4:

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:

  • Expert-level knowledge of HPC clusters and associated infrastructure, excluding power and cooling infrastructure.

  • Familiarity with large supercomputing environments for US government programs.

  • Expert-level knowledge of the project management discipline.

  • Expert-level knowledge of the technical or operational discipline of project deployments.

  • Expert-level knowledge of regulatory and Laboratory requirements related to project deployments.

  • Demonstrated experience successfully leading a major computing cluster deployment effort.

  • Demonstrated experience effectively communicating and interacting with others at many levels, both verbal and written, including senior-level management.

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with technical and non-technical staff to execute complex efforts against specific deadlines.

  • Demonstrated ability to define a project from sets of necessary efforts in an HPC or other technical context.

  • Consultative experience interacting at a technical level with vendor organizations providing integrated hardware and software products at large scale.

Education/Experience at lower level : Position requires a minimum of a bachelor’s degree and at least 8 years of relevant experience.

Education/Experience at higher level : Position requires 12 years of relevant experience for the level 4, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with power, cooling, and facilities infrastructure for HPC.

  • Familiarity with federal policies and procedures, particularly those related to procurement, budget oversight, safety and security, and environmental sustainability.

  • Understanding of computing security requirements in an HPC environment.

  • Experience managing large ($10M+) computing R&D portfolios or organizations.

  • SCI or ability to obtain an SCI clearance

  • For TPM 4: Direct line management experience

Location: This position will be physically located in Los Alamos, NM.
