Los Alamos National Laboratory TA-55 Area Controller (Operations Support Specialist 2/3) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

This position will be filled at the Operations Support Specialist 2/3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

The Weapons Production Directorate is seeking motivated candidates to fill multiple Operations Support Specialist positions. The selected candidates will facilitate safe, compliant and efficient execution of work at TA-55.

Primary duties of the Operations Support Specialist 2 ($62,800 - $99,800) position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Assists in the day-to-day execution of floor schedule at TA-55, specifically within PF-4, P-5, and other nuclear areas as needed.

  • Ensure work performed is in accordance with the scheduling and execution procedures, and production priorities established by the ALDWP leadership team.

  • Ensure compliance with safety/security requirements and take the necessary steps to stop work if continuing a job is unsafe or compromises security.

  • Assists production with the integration and coordination of various support resources.

  • Support communication between work owning organizations, area controllers, and ORI-2 management.

  • Attendance at daily scheduling meetings for coordination and release of work.

  • Support quality checks on schedules and log issues as needed.

  • Support incident and general issues management investigations and reporting.

Primary duties of the Operations Support Specialist 3 ($75,400 - $122,900) position include, but are not limited to, the following:

In addition to the duties outlined above, the Operations Support Specialist 3 will be required to:

  • Contribute to the development of new methods and process improvements in relation to operational support activities.

  • Coordinate various administrative functions in conjunction with, or in support of, operational program compliance, planning, prioritizing, and scheduling of work activities.

  • Contributes to the development of corrective actions that accurately address the apparent and root cause of production issues.

Organizational Skills

Demonstrated attention to detail including strong organizational skills, analytical thinking, observational skills and problem solving skills. Proven ability to multi-task and adjust to the workings of a dynamic team environment.


Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills. Demonstrated advanced skills networking effectively with stakeholders and key contacts outside own area of expertise, both internal and external to the organization.

Customer Service

Exceptional customer service, organizational skills, and ability to interact with all levels of personnel internal and external to the organization.

Clearance: Eligible to obtain a DOE Q Clearance

In addition to the Job Requirements outlined above, qualification at the Operations Support Specialist 3 level requires:

  • Advanced knowledge of facility operations

  • Demonstrated advanced ability to conceptualize and communicate major elements of facility operations and operational quality assurance to both technical and non-technical personnel.

  • Demonstrated advanced ability to field, prioritize and resolve multiple emergent issues simultaneously.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated ability to use advanced knowledge of all areas of PF-4 to prioritize and schedule resources.

  • Experience with radiological control practices and policies.

  • Advanced knowledge of nuclear facility operations.

  • Advanced knowledge of typical business and project management software.

  • Knowledge of Laboratory policies and procedures.

  • Advanced knowledge of requirements drivers such as DOE orders and federal regulations.

  • Advanced knowledge of manufacturing scheduling principles and practices.

  • Active DOE Q-Clearance or equivalent level DOD Clearance.

Operations Support Specialist 2 Education Required: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution and 5 years of directly related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Operations Support Specialist 3 Education Required: Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 8 years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. At this level, postgraduate course work may be desirable.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served at least one year of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
