What You Will Do
Weapon Stockpile Modernization Division (Q Division) provides systems engineering and program management to develop and field qualified engineering solutions to improve the safety, reliability and security of our Nation's nuclear stockpile throughout the weapon life cycle. Q Division is responsible for leadership of activities in new LANL weapons programs as well as life extension and alternation projects.
The Advanced System Development Group (Q-18) is responsible for Systems and Design Engineering of Future Weapons Systems up to phase 3/6.3 with emphasis on improved performance, safety, produce ability and agility of the future stockpile, Interagency Peer Reviews (IPRs) of LLNL Systems, and Future System and System Agnostic Design and System Engineering support to a wide range of experiments from internally fielded technology tests to hydrodynamic and subcritical experiments.
The selected candidate will work as an integral team member in Q-18, the Advanced System Development Group as a lead System Engineer for major efforts on the W93 Phase 1 program, the Joint Technology Demonstrator Program or other major future system programs. Work includes close collaboration with Program leads, management, as well as a wide set of organizations both inside and outside the laboratory including XTD, the Navy, Lockheed Martin, Sandia National Laboratory, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and multiple Nuclear Security Enterprise (NSE) Production Agencies.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Detailed expert-level knowledge of the Nuclear Weapons Systems. Demonstrated expert knowledge of nuclear weapon system design, qualification, certification and production including materials, components, safety, and assembly.
Minimum of 10 years of experience in one or more of the following: nuclear weapon design, development, qualification, certification, assembly/production, or surveillance. Demonstrated experience in the application of system engineering principles, at an advanced level, providing solutions in one or more of the following disciplines; material science, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, nuclear engineering, or chemical engineering.
Demonstrated excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills; demonstrated ability to interact effectively with all levels of Laboratory personnel/senior management, including internal and external customers, as well as experience with conflict resolution.
Demonstrated ability to meet schedule and deliverables for multiple concurrent projects with a range of priorities. Demonstrated consultative record of developing and fostering successful cross-organizational teams to solve complex problems. Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimum supervision, as well as the ability to be an effective member of a multidisciplinary team. Expert-level knowledge of and consultative experience in all aspects of project management of technical or operational work, including developing project plans, work breakdown structures, and work packages; managing to scope, schedule, budget, and technical baselines; and documenting baseline reports and change control actions.
Training/Certifications: Models Based System Engineering (MBSE) training and experience.
Education/Experience: Position requires a Master’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 12 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level a Ph.D. may be preferred.
Detailed knowledge of LANL and LLNL nuclear weapon systems and their associated delivery vehicles
Familiar with Navy nuclear weapon program and organization structures
Understanding of re-entry, gravity, and powered flight weapon systems used both by DOE and DOD
Knowledge of weapon surety and safety solutions
Familiarity with development of specifications for components and systems
Experience in a leadership role
Knowledge of Digital Engineering and Models Based System Engineering
Ability to work between electrical and mechanical engineering disciplines
Experience presenting technical design details to technical and non-technical customers
Understanding of NNSA and DOD flight vehicle qualification processes
Active Q clearance
Work Environment: Foreign/Domestic travel
