Los Alamos National Laboratory Systems Administrator (Computing Systems Professional 3) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

This Computing Systems Professional will become a valuable team member for the mobility device management service at Los Alamos National Laboratory. Thousands of smart phones and tablets are utilized by laboratory staff, with steady year over year growth. The laboratory also has several internally developed mobile applications. This team member will allow the service support team to function at a highly loaded but manageable workload level and provide support for the service during all core business hours. The primary focus of this position is Windows 2016/2019 server administration of mobile device management servers, device and application policy management, and enterprise load balancer administration. This position will be responsible for:

  • Health, maintenance, and patching of Windows servers

  • Health, maintenance, and patching of load balancer appliances

  • Providing tier 3 level customer and technician support

  • Reviewing, testing, and implementing device and application policies

  • Drafting and maintaining server and user support documentation

  • Developing scripts to automate reoccurring tasks

  • Performs research and development to identify and implement applicable emerging technologies in the Laboratory computing environment

  • Utilizes formal project management methodologies; gathers customer requirements; performs risk management functions; performs capacity and availability planning for computing infrastructure; performs effective communication both, verbal and written, at all levels.

  • Provides operational support for customers using standard operating procedures. Operational duties may include troubleshooting, granting permissions, and training users. Typical tasks may include installing, configuring, and maintaining operational systems, including Web servers. Monitors and tunes the system to achieve optimum performance levels. Performs software installations and upgrades to operating systems and layered software packages. Schedules installations and upgrades and maintains them in accordance with established IT policies and procedures

  • Ensures data integrity by evaluating, implementing, and managing appropriate software and hardware solutions. Ensures data/media recoverability by implementing a schedule of system backups and database archive operations. Designs and implements media management based on requirements through internal methods and procedures or through offsite storage and retrieval services (disaster recovery).

  • May program in a compiled or interpretive language.

  • Develops and maintains a comprehensive operating system hardware and software configuration database/library of all supporting documentation.

  • Conducts, or assists in routine hardware and software audits of workstations and servers to ensure compliance with established standards, policies, and configuration guidelines.

  • Works on complex issues where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors. Exercises sound judgment in selecting methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results. Internal and external contacts often pertain to Laboratory plans and objectives.

  • Fosters a mutually respectful and inclusive work environment that is free from discrimination and harassment.

Demonstrated Competencies:

  • Knowledge in administration, configuration & customization of Microsoft Windows Server 2016/2019 operating system.

  • Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication skills in order to interact with customers, field technicians, system administrators, project and information security teams, large audiences and senior management.

  • Cognitive ability; able to learn, think, understand and remember. This position requires staff to process information on the fly and solve problems.

  • Leadership; when faced with a problem the ability to step forward and lead or step back and relinquish control.

  • Ownership and teamwork; the sense of responsibility to step up and solve a problem or embrace the better ideas of others.

Education/Experience : Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree and 8 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, applicable advanced vendor and/or professional certification is desirable

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience supporting mobile application/device management services and devices

  • Experience with load balancing

  • Experience with Microsoft 365

  • Experience administering Windows server environments and systems

  • Understanding of domain name system (DNS) including recursive queries, A, CName, and SRV records

  • Understanding of certificate based cryptographic protocols (S/MIME and TLS)

  • Understanding of authentication mechanisms (Kerberos, certificate-based, modern)

  • Ability to script for automated tasks as well as data manipulation and presentation

  • Training and/or certification in relevant technologies

Location: This position will be physically located in Los Alamos, NM and this position will be part of the Laboratory’s Telework Pilot and may work from a remote/home location within a two-hour ground commute of the Laboratory. The Telework Pilot is in effect from Oct. 1, 2020 through Sept. 30, 2021, but may be shortened or extended at the manager’s discretion.Ability to report on-site is a must for this position.

Position Commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.
