Los Alamos National Laboratory Space Plasma Physics Postdoc in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The T-5 Applied Mathematics and Plasma Physics group of the Los Alamos National Laboratory has an opening for a postdoctoral position in space plasma physics. The candidate is expected to contribute to one or more of the ongoing research efforts, which include:

  • The interaction between magnetospheric particle populations and plasma waves, with application to radiation belt remediation.

  • The study of plasma instabilities at the plasmapause and their connection with auroral forms such as giant undulations.

  • Studies of the impact of the cold electron and cold ion populations in the Earth’s magnetosphere.

  • Global magnetospheric modeling including microscopic physics accurately.

  • The interaction of spacecraft with magnetized plasmas, specifically on spacecraft charging mitigation and on inverse spacecraft-charging calculations for data interpretation from various space missions.

An ideal candidate will have a strong interdisciplinary background combined with in-depth expertise relevant to one or more topics summarized above.

These projects are supported by collaborations within T-5 (involving statisticians, applied mathematicians and physicists), with other groups at Los Alamos (in particular the Intelligence and Space Research, the Accelerator Operations and Technology and the Computer, Computational and Statistical Science divisions), and with other groups within the US and internationally.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Experience with coding languages such as Fortran and/or C++, and other software such as Matlab or python

  • Demonstrated research ability, as evidenced by publications, reports, presentations, awards, etc

  • Excellent communication skills (both oral and written)

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience in one of the research areas outlined above

  • Experience with numerical methods and high-performance computing

  • Ability to work independently as well as to work effectively as a part of a team in a multi-disciplinary environment and interact with people with a variety of expertise

  • Entrepreneurial spirit and willingness to take initiatives and pursue new research directions

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 .
