What You Will Do
The Software and Applications Engineering (SAE) Division supports Los Alamos National Laboratory’s (LANL) enterprise applications and performs software application development support, database development and administration, software quality management, and enterprise application consulting. The Enterprise Business Software Group (SAE-2) provides custom application development, commercial off-the-shelf application implementation, database administration, and adoption/integration with Software as a Service solutions. SAE-2 supports business processes for financial, personnel, procurement, and human resources IT systems.
Solutions Architect 4 ($125,200.00-$210,600.00)
Working alongside some of the brightest minds, you will work with a team using agile development methodologies that supports existing custom and COST applications. You will also design, develop, test and deploy new functionality to any new or existing applications the team is working on. Beyond daily tasks needed on the team, in this role, you will also provide technical leadership to the team and group by providing future vision, determining Laboratory-wide requirements and incorporating them into COTS or custom solutions. As a principal architect, you will be responsible for oversight and development of project documentation, schedules, and resource utilization through coordination with Scrum Master and Product Owner. You will also be providing technical mentorship to junior members of the team along with architectural direction for complex systems. The successful candidate should also have a strong desire to learn new technologies, business processes, to become an expert in their field, and the willingness and confidence to develop advanced concepts, techniques, and standards based on professional principles and theories in developing safety-class, mission-critical software. We are looking for someone who likes to self-initiate work with limited supervision, use independent judgment for determining the course of action to accomplish objectives, and use a broad range of advanced technical skills to solve complex technical issues. At this level, on-call responsibilities along with after-hours production work on the existing systems are expected.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Proven software lifecycle knowledge and experience in all phases, including requirements, design, development, and testing with appropriate documentation. Experience in writing and implementing business solutions using agile practices and principles. Experience with preparing software design documentation, project planning timelines and estimates.
Demonstrate experience with designing, working and utilizing relational and non-relational Databases. Experience consuming and authoring RESTful and/or SOAP web services. Demonstrated experience designing and developing business solutions and/or integration solutions from the ground up with utilization of design patterns. Professional experience using multiple programming languages and frameworks, such as .NET, MEAN/MERN, or React JS. Knowledge of the DevSecOps culture and principles and experience with CI/CD development, and deployment of software in diverse application environments. Experience with software configuration management and software quality assurance methodologies and practices. Demonstrate knowledge of secure coding practices. Experience analyzing and defining business requirements and preparing technical designs. Experience utilizing a distributed version control system.
Experience developing system integration and system implementation plans. Ability to solve unique integration problems by using analytic ability and innovative thinking to meet budget, timetables, and objectives. Experience and demonstrated skill in conducting research, investigating alternative solutions, and recommending solutions to problems. Ability to work towards long term goals in a large organizational setting.
Excellent writing and verbal communication skills with ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with technical and non-technical peers, customers, and stakeholders. Ability to work independently with minimal direction and/or serve as a Technical Lead on projects and coordinate technical activities of project personnel. Ability to negotiate and use proper judgment in order to resolve conflicts, solve problems, increase efficiency, and improve services and products with minimal management help. Demonstrate experience and willingness to provide technical mentorship to junior staff members. Strong teamwork and communication skills.

Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree and 15 years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, postgraduate coursework may be expected.
Experience using project management tools such as Jira and Confluence.
Experience supporting, integrating, and extending Cloud applications.
Experience using automated functional testing tools like Eggplant.
Experience with Oracle E-Business Suite, Oracle databases (version 12c or higher), or APEX.
Experience with JEE and JPA
Experience utilizing AWS or Azure.

Location: This position will be part of the Laboratory’s Telework Pilot and may work from a remote/home location within a two-hour ground commute of the Laboratory. Employee participation in the Telework Pilot may be shortened or extended at the manager’s discretion. Ability to report on-site is a must for this position.
