Los Alamos National Laboratory Software Release Engineer (Software Developer 2/3) in Los Alamos, New Mexico
What You Will Do
This position will be filled at either the Software Developer 2 or 3 level; depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
We are seeking a creative and highly motivated Software Release Engineer to join our collaborative and dynamic team that work on a portfolio of exciting, challenging, and cutting-edge scientific and national security space missions. The Space Data Science and Systems Group (ISR-3) is an integral part of the Intelligence and Space Research (ISR) Division and is central to all Los Alamos space projects through its core capabilities in software development, mission operations, data exploitation, machine learning, data systems development, and integration.
The Intelligence and Space Research (ISR) Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory has been designing, building, and operating highly innovative ground, air and space-based measurement and detection systems for over 60 years. We solve some of the most challenging scientific and national security problems facing the world today. Our interdisciplinary teams of engineers, technicians, and scientists work, learn, and succeed through a highly creative and dynamic R&D environment. We lead experiments on NASA missions, including the Perseverence and Curiosity Rovers, Van Allen Probes, and IBEX as well as the upcoming IMAP Mission, NACHOS hyperspectral CubeSat, and BEAMPIE rocket experiment. We also build, fly, operate and analyze data from measurement systems deployed to space for verification of international nuclear treaties, and develop innovative sensors, ground, airborne, and space hardware/software systems for basic scientific missions, nuclear nonproliferation, space situational awareness and remote sensing.
Software Developer 2 ($77,300 - $126,000)
Perform and troubleshoot RPM release engineering for a large software project including scripting, versioning, tagging, and testing
Install and maintain software packages / dependencies on a collection of local virtual machines
Install and maintain software packages / dependencies at remote sites
Monitor and troubleshoot Jenkins continuous integration testing
Monitor software project bug reports and coordinate solutions
Control and maintain user/permissions on virtual machines and wikis
Coordinate beta testing and test procedures
Present results of work at daily/weekly project meetings
Provide accurate status reporting on all assigned tasking
Develop conversion, system integration and system implementation plans
Gather reporting requirements and recommends and implements solution
Recommend changes in development, maintenance and system standards
Maintain required safety and security training, assures safety and security compliance, and makes safety and security an integral part of every task
Continuous learning and career development through mentoring, coaching, and collaborations across the space programs
Software Developer 3 ($94,100 - $155,700)
In addition to the duties outlined above, Software Developer 3 responsibilities include:
Participate in process and project planning with senior team members
Mentor junior team members
Contribute to peer review of work of those within the organization
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Programming experience with C++ and Python
Unix/Linux Operating System experience
Experience with one of the following version control systems: SVN, git, or mercurial
Experience with development/maintenance of software release engineering
Demonstrated ability to interact effectively in a team environment
Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as part of a team
Effective written and oral communication skills
Additional Job Requirements for Software Developer 3:
In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:
Software development experience using high-level languages (Python, C, C++, etc.) in a team environment using revision control tools (SVN, GIT, etc.)
Experience with a formal software development process
Experience working as a highly effective team member on a medium or large project
Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in a STEM field from an accredited college or university and 5 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in a STEM field from an accredited college or university and 8 years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. Graduate course work is desirable.
Experience building RPMs
Experience in formal software development processes
Experience working with sensitive or classified information
Active “Q” Clearance

for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.
Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. SeeDOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
