Los Alamos National Laboratory Senior Telecom Technician (Telecommunications Professional 2) in Los Alamos, New Mexico
What You Will Do
Use your telecom skills to support national security! At Los Alamos National Laboratory, the Network, Infrastructure, and Engineering‐Telecommunication Services group (NIE‐TS) is seeking an experienced Telecommunication Professional to provide operational support services for the telephone field operations team. This position will use your wide-ranging skills and experience to maintain all aspects of the traditional telecom fields and challenge you with new and exciting technologies to master. The NIE-TS team operates telephony switching services (Nokia 5ESS), installs new fiber optic and copper circuits, and maintains a site-wide copper and fiber plant within the 43 square mile telecommunications infrastructure. You will have the opportunity to hone your network skills in our robust VoIP environment, with daily Broadsoft and Cisco component interactions. Demonstrate your professionalism and responsibility for work control and circuit management with minimal direct supervision. This position will provide administrative and operational support to engineers and technical team members , and job assignments will include the provisioning and maintenance of TDM/VoIP switching, telecom cabling – both fiber and copper, and activities related to various telecommunications infrastructure including bucket truck operations and manhole access. This position will also support daily-buried plant locating using top-of-the line locating equipment, as well as telephone (VoIP) installation and repair.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Two to five years of experience in telecommunication systems, methodologies, tools and processes.
Expert knowledge of telephone installation, dispatch, and workload control.
Expertise in the use of standard telecom testing equipment, fiber optic testing/meters and splicing (fusion).
Ability to partner with customers and define requirements.
Ability to organize projects and teams and manage end‐to‐end work processes.
Ability to translate technical terms to layperson's terms and present them to audiences outside of NIE and the Laboratory.
Communication skills for working closely with customers and suppliers to define expectations and mutual responsibilities. Heavy reliance on written work product.
Expertise in Microsoft Office Applications, SharePoint, Visio, and GIS.
Training/Certifications: BICSI Certified Fiber/Copper Technician desired
Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree and 2 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation, or equivalent industry certifications.
DOE Q Clearance
Experience with federal facility rules and regulations on communication operations
Advanced knowledge of hardware and software integration and testing, as well as IT network design and operation fundamentals
VoIP solutions experience
Network switch and Ethernet operations and testing
Utility locating equipment and marking
CDL driver's license and bucket truck operations
Maintenance hole activities (access procedures, splicing, and air pressure systems)
Experience with inventory management fundamentals
Experience with COMIT (Communication Management Information Tool) tracking Technician activities, workflow, billing, and time and materials.
Location: This position will be physically located in Los Alamos, New Mexico.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
