What You Will Do
The Senior Network Engineer is part of the Networking Infrastructure and Engineering division working on the Network Engineering Team in the Infrastructure Services group. The candidate will serve as a principal architect of LANL’s large and complex network serving the entire campus. The candidate will determine Laboratory-wide requirements and incorporate those requirements into solutions that support LANL’s many programs. The candidate will work directly with customers from many fields to find solutions to their networking problems. They also may be responsible for oversight of project documentation, marketing, training, budget, schedules, resource utilization, and benefits realization on complex solutions projects. This position is full-time and located at Los Alamos National Laboratory in Los Alamos, New Mexico.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Expert knowledge and demonstrated application of current and future network technologies, how they interoperate, and how to architect complex solutions.
Demonstrated excellent written and oral communication skills, organizational and project management skills.
Demonstrated team-building experience with other professionals.
Ability to obtain a DOE Q Clearance.
Training/Certifications: Typically requires networking specific training and certifications.
Education/Experience: Requires a Bachelor’s degree in related field and a minimum of 15 years of related experience.
Expert knowledge of layer 2 protocols including Ethernet and VLANs
Expert routing knowledge including BGP and OSPF.
Advanced knowledge of load balancers.
Advanced DevOps skills including frameworks and technologies (Ansible/Python/etc)
Advanced troubleshooting skills requiring packet traces and analysis.

Where You Will Work
The Network Infrastructure and Engineering (NIE) Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is responsible for operating and maintaining the networks across a thousand facilities for over 10,000 employees. The Infrastructure and Service (IS) Group maintains a variety of network services for the laboratory including network architecture and implementation. The Network Engineering team is seeking its next dynamic team member to help define, deploy, maintain, evaluate, and develop our existing and future campus and datacenter networks. This position is full-time and is located at Los Alamos National Laboratory in Los Alamos, New Mexico. The solutions architect serves as principal architect of large and complex networking solutions. The candidate will determine Laboratory-wide requirements and incorporates these requirements into solutions that may be commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) or internally developed software and hardware. Interested candidates may be responsible for project management in implementing complex solutions. They also may be responsible for oversight of project documentation, marketing, training, budget, schedules, resource utilization, and benefits realization on complex solutions projects.
The ideal candidate will have a wide-ranging experience, uses professional concepts and Laboratory objectives to resolve complex issues in creative and effective ways. They will frequently contribute to the development of new theories and methods, considered expert in field within the organization, and develop resolutions to complex problems that require the frequent use of creativity. The work is accomplished without considerable direction and may coordinate activities of other personnel.
