What You Will Do
This position will be filled at either the R&D; Engineer 2 or R&D; Engineer 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
The Space and Remote Sensing Group (ISR-2) at Los Alamos National Laboratory is seeking a qualified R&D; Engineer to participate in the execution of our portfolio of cutting-edge research programs in remote-sensing, with special emphasis in measurement, signal processing and phenomenology. Relevant technologies include: vibrometry, radio frequency (RF) emissions, spectral sensing, and other passive/active remote sensing approaches. Areas of research and development that the successful candidate will participate in include one or more of the following:
Exceptional candidates may be considered for a higher-level position, and additional job responsibilities will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher-level position.
R&D; Engineer 2 ($87,800-$144,800):
Work as part of a diverse team in a collaborative and multidisciplinary technical environment and provide written and oral communications to individuals at the Lab and the DOE enterprise.
Work in one or more of the following areas:
Development of algorithms and techniques for processing time-series and spectral data, signal detection and characterization, modulations/demodulation, and high-level statistical inference in data intensive settings
Source-to-sensor modeling, including modeling of source physics, signal propagation, sensor performance, and validation of data processing and analysis algorithms
Scientific and statistical analysis of data coupled with theoretical modeling and understanding the underlying RF emission and propagation physics
Design of innovative RF instruments using improved concepts based on demonstrated physics principles and the development of new detection principles
Conduct field experiments at various national and potentially international locations
R&D; Engineer 3 (96,600-161,300):
In addition to the job responsibilities outlined above, the R&D; Engineer 3 will:
Identify, promote, and develop appropriate new Laboratory-wide technical capabilities
Provide leadership for scientific work including publishing in peer-reviewed journals.

What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
R&D; Engineer 2:
Demonstrated knowledge and experience with conducting basic and/or applied research or technical work that is relevant to one or more of the above programs and focus areas
Experience with the application of basic techniques in signal processing or statistical detection theory
Some combination of experience with RF or other instrumentation such as antennas, software defined radios, electronics, sensors, lasers, or data acquisition
Some experience with applied computing to process, analyze, and interpret data, and demonstrable knowledge of one or more scientific programming languages (e.g. C/C++, Python, Matlab, IDL)
Demonstrated ability to interact effectively in a team environment and ability to work independently
Demonstrated ability to express ideas clearly in written and oral communications including a history of contributing to technical papers and/or reports
Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance (generally requires U.S. citizenship)
Additional Job Requirements for R&D; Engineer 3
In addition to the Job Requirements outlined above, qualification at the R&D; Engineer 3 level requires:
Some combination of experience with applied mathematics, scientific data analysis, and the practical use of numerical algorithms for analysis and interpretation of data sets (e.g. imaging, time-series, spectral, etc.
Demonstrated experience with algorithms development and commensurate experience with applied computing to collect, process, analyze, and/or interpret data with some combination of the following:
Automated data collection
In-situ processing (edge computing)
Multi-sensor fusion, including interferometry
Digital Signal Processing with real-time processing emphasis
Sparse-array detection and algorithms
Demonstrated experience with the development of innovative signal processing algorithms or approaches
Demonstrated ability to utilize physical models of RF/Optical/IR/UV signal generation, propagation, and sensing in order to design effective signal detection and processing algorithms
Experience in one or more of the following are desired:
Demonstrated experience with the development or deployment of remote-sensing RF
Experience with data acquisition and management of large data sets
Experience with laser-based remote sensing
Experience with instrument response characterization, calibration, and optimization
R&D; Engineer 2: Graduate degree (PhD or Master’s) in electrical engineering, optical engineering, physics or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience
R&D; Engineer 3: Requirements for R&D; Engineer 2 and significant record of professional scientific/engineering work experience and accomplishment.
