Los Alamos National Laboratory Research Technologist 2/3 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

This position will be part of the Quality Assurance (QA) team providing support to the actinide analytical chemistry group, C-AAC, through development, implementation, and evaluation of processes, procedures, and applications contributing to the overall objective an effective Quality Management System. The individual will participate in analytical chemistry data package review, nonconformance reporting, root cause analysis, corrective action processes, assessments of technical processes, M&TE calibrations and tracking, and other QA functions as required. This position will be filled at either the Research Technologist 2/3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Research Technologist 2, $85,400 - $139,600

The successful candidate will:

  • Perform calibration of Measuring and Test Equipment (M&TE) including analytical balances and volumetric labware.

  • Interface with the Metrology Program and Calibration Laboratory (MP&CL) as C-AAC M&TE Cooridantor.

  • Assist in conducting quality surveillances of analytical chemistry operations.

  • Assist in conducting causal analysis.

  • Ensure C-AAC User Performed Calibration (UPC) procedures are in compliance with the requirements of the MP&CL UPC program.

  • Assist in the effective implementation of C-AAC QA program as related to analytical chemistry.

Research Technologist 3 $94,100 - $155,700

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level the successful candidate will:

  • Technical review of analytical chemistry data packages, quality control results, and general analytical chemistry data results.

  • Lead causal analysis including developing corrective actions for quality assurance, quality control and analytical chemistry issues.

  • Conduct tracking and trending of C-AAC’s issues related to Issues Management.

  • Schedule and lead Quality Assurance suveillances.

  • Initiate and close Nonconformance Reports.

  • Implement Weapons (WR) Quality Assurance requirements (NAP-401.1, PA-PLAN-01062) related to Pu sustainment activites related to analytical chemistry.

  • Primary point-of-contact for the ISO17025 annual accreditiation activities.

  • Review C-AAC analytical technical procedures against ISO17025, WR, and Quality Assurance/Quality Control requirements.

  • Act as point-of-contact for Software Quality Assurance (SQA) activites and interface with WR SQA engineers.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with analytical chemistry methods and procedures, ASTM requirements for analytical chemistry, ASTM requirements for calibration of M&TE, and EPA 8260 methods.

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with all of the following: Issues Management system, M&TE calibrations, records management, controlled storage, reviewing technical procedures against institutional and customer requirements, Weapons and procurement processes, tracking of M&TE, and receipt inspections.

  • Proven knowledge of or experience with implementing 10CFR830 Subpart A, DOE O 414.1D, NQA-1, ISO17025, NAP-401.1 or other quality assurance programs related to analytical chemistry.

  • Proven knowledge of or experience with quality assurance activities such as; audits, assessments, and surveillances; conducting caual analysis including recommending and implementing corrective actions; initiating and tracking nonconformance reports; and ensuring quality assurance compliance.

  • Demonstrated experience in providing quality and performance assurance, regulatory compliance, and requirements implementation at the Laboratory.

  • Hands on analytical chemistry experience including sample analysis, control charts, quality control requirements, and analytical data packages.

Additional Job Requirements for Reseach Technologist 3:

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:

  • Proven advanced experience withimplementing 10CFR830 Subpart A, DOE O 414.1D, NQA-1, ISO17025:2017, NAP-401.1 or applicable other quality assurance programs related to analytical chemistry.

  • Experience providing quality assurance/control support to analytical chemistry operations.

  • Proven advanced experience in providing quality and performance assurance, regulatory compliance, and requirements implementation support at the Laboratory.

  • Proven advanced experience researching, assembling, and/or evaluating information or data regarding industry practices or applicable regulatory changes affecting QA policies or programs; recommends sound, practical solutions to complex issues.

  • Software Quality Assurance experience and/or knowledge.

  • Understanding of actinide analytical chemistry procedures and/or methods.

Education/Experience at lower level : Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution and 5 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education/Experience at higher level Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution and 8 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, post graduate course work may be desirable.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Current or previously achieved lead auditor certification from a recognized professional organization and/or lead auditor qualification from a previous employer.

  • Advanced experience in the identification and resolution of performance problems associated with quality and continuous improvement.

Essential Job Functions (can perform with or without reasonable accommodation): Reading vision, depth perception, sitting, standing, lifting and carrying 10-20 pounds.

Work Environment: Work near sources of ionizing radiation, near sources of non-ionizing radiation, and toxic chemicals.
