What You Will Do

The position resides in the Thin Films and Coatings (TFC) Team at MST-7 Group. The TFC team expertize includes three main fields: (i) physical vapor deposition (PVD); (ii) chemical vapor deposition (CVD); and (iii) surface probe microscopies (atomic force and scanning tunneling microscopies). The successful applicant will be expected to actively contribute to research projects focused on coatings fabrication by PVD and CVD methods. The PVD capabilities consist of various thin film deposition instruments (electron beam evaporation, magnetron sputtering, ion beam assisted deposition) and spread over three laboratories in the Target Fabrication Facility. The CVD capabilities include traditional hot walled, cold walled and fluidized bed reactors.

Work tasks include, but are not limited to:

  • Oversee day-to day operations at the PVD/CVD laboratories

  • Utilize thin film characterization equipment

  • Keep records and independently summarize data

  • Contribute to technical reports, manuscripts and presentations

  • Design and install new equipment

  • Mentor interns, students and postdocs

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated experience in operation, maintenance, repair and upgrade PVD and/or CVD instrumentation.

  • Demonstrated experience in thin film fabrication by PVD and/or CVD.

  • Demonstrated experience in thin film properties characterization, one or more of the following: thickness, morphology, microstructure, composition, adhesion strength, optical properties, electrical properties, thermo-physical properties.

  • Demonstrated experience accomplishing technical tasks while working independently as well as in a team environment.

  • Demonstrated experience working and delivering product on schedule, while being involved in multiple projects having various and sometimes changing priorities.

  • Demonstrated successful experience working with radiological materials, chemicals, and compressed gases including flammable and toxic gases.

  • Demonstrated experience following safety and security requirements during execution of assigned tasks.

  • Demonstrated excellent record of dependability, availability, attendance and punctuality.

  • Ability to obtain a Q clearance, which normally requires U.S. citizenship.

Desired Skills:

  • Experience in writing or contributing to Integrated Work Documents, Operating Procedures, Waste Profiles or other work planning documents.

  • Experience with LabView programming

  • An active DOE Q-clearance

Education: The position typically requires a relevant Master’s degree from a college or university program, or a minimum of 5 years of related experience.

Located in northern New Mexico, Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in strategic science on behalf of national security. The Engineered Materials Group (MST-7) provides multidisciplinary expertise in materials science ranging from polymers and foams to ceramic nuclear fuels and materials discovery. This expertise is focused on delivering technology solutions for national security missions. The group has great breadth and depth in target fabrication for High Energy Density Physics experiments, Polymer Science and Engineering, a strong coatings capability, including physical and chemical vapor deposition, Nuclear Fuels research and extensive Characterization and Forensics capabilities. In particular, MST-7 applies an extensive knowledge of chemistry, physics, materials science, chemical engineering, and mechanical engineering to study matter under various environmental and extreme conditions relevant to our customers. MST-7 is involved in many research programs, such as inertial confinement fusion, nuclear weapons programs, including core and enhanced surveillance, directed stockpile and lifetime extension programs, global security, homeland defense, and civilian applications of materials technologies. MST-7 personnel include scientists, engineers, technologists, technicians and administrative support personnel, who team within the group and with other organizations to fulfill our various missions.
