Los Alamos National Laboratory Research Technologist 1 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

Los Alamos National Laboratory (the Laboratory or LANL) is looking for a skilled Research Technologist 1 to join the Dual-Axis Radiographic Hydrodynamic Test (DARHT) Engineering, Operations, and Physics (J-6) Group. The Research Technologist 1 will be assigned to the Diagnostics Team in J-6. J-6 provides state-of-the-art accelerator, pulsed power, beam-target, and radiographic physics capabilities in support of the Laboratory's hydrodynamic test mission. Primary responsibilities of J-6 include: (1) designing, modeling, and verifying beam physics on Axis I and Axis II of DARHT; (2) simulating and experimenting beam-target interactions and Warm Dense Matter physics; (3) designing, modeling, and verifying relativistic electron diodes; (4) designing and fielding diagnostics including pulsed power and non-invasive beam and plasma diagnostics; (5) supporting system engineering for the pulsed power and associated systems for both accelerator axes; (6) designing and implementing pulsed power design for existing and new accelerators and radiographic systems; and (7) supporting LANL’s Scorpius project, a new multi-pulse linear induction accelerator for radiographic testing.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Two years of electrical diagnostics experience

  • Interest in one or more of the following areas: (1) Accelerator Physics, (2) X-ray diagnostics, (3) Conventional accelerator & pulsed power diagnostics.

  • Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills as demonstrated by written technical documents, papers, or project presentations. Demonstrated experience interacting with all levels of personnel and customers. Strong teaming skills.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-clearance.

Education/Experience :Position requires at a least a bachelor’s degree from an Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) accredited engineering college or university program in Electrical Engineeringor a STEM-related field and a minimum of two years of related experience.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with oscilloscopes, digitizers, and delay generators.

  • Experience with integrated circuits and timing systems.

  • Experience with accelerator, radiation, and pulsed power diagnostics.

  • Knowledge of electrical, mechanical, and vacuum systems.

  • Knowledge of computer operations, diagnostic control, and data acquisition.

  • Active DOE or DoD security clearance.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements

  • for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. SeeDOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
