Los Alamos National Laboratory Research Library Associate (Information Research Specialist 1 / 2) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do_

This position will be filled at either the Information Research Specialist 1 or Information Research Specialist 2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

The LANL Research Library seeks a hard-working library associate to deliver research support. You will provide information resources and services to Laboratory scientists and engineers and help build and manage the Research Library technical report collection.

Information Research Specialist 1 ($54,400 - $86,400)

The successful candidate will:_

  • Assist customers in utilizing library collections and services

  • Locate reports, verify access per established guidelines, and supply reports to customers

  • Scan reports from print and microform formats, perform quality control, OCR and manipulation of documents

  • Assist customers in obtaining items through interlibrary loan or document delivery

  • Help customers to check out and renew items

  • Verify and maintain metadata in library systems

  • Assure proper storage and handling of controlled information

Information Research Specialist 2 ($60,400 - $95,900)

In addition to the duties outlined above, the Information Research Specialist 2 will:_

  • Assist customers in finding research information

  • Create and manage metadata in library systems, especially for technical reports

  • Assist in developing policies and projects for library or institutional repository services

  • Interact with colleagues in other LANL organizations to obtain information

  • Assist in the long-term management and preservation of unique report collections

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Familiarity with providing reference assistance

  • Familiarity with document scanning and manipulating pdf documents

  • Demonstrated ability to follow practices and procedures for releasing information

  • Strong communication skills, both orally and in writing

  • Great attention to detail in all work routines

  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team-based environment

  • Demonstrated commitment to customer service and professionalism

Additional Job Requirements for Information Research Specialist 2:

In addition to the Job Requirements outlined above, qualification at the Information Research Specialist 2 level requires:

  • Working knowledge of bibliographic records, publication formats, and library systems

  • Ability to formulate and implement innovative approaches and solutions to problems

  • Ability to conduct technical literature or bibliographic searches in both internal and external databases

Desired Skills:

  • Experience with providing research, reference, and circulation assistance

  • Experience with interlibrary loan and/or document delivery

  • Knowledge of metadata creation to describe digital objects

  • Knowledge of digital preservation and archival practices

  • Familiarity with DOE/NNSA Laboratories research and development mission areas

  • Active Q Clearance


  • Information Research Specialist 1: High school diploma or GED, and a minimum of two years related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Information Research Specialist 2: A bachelor’s degree and a minimum five years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
