Los Alamos National Laboratory R&D Manager 3 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The Actinide Analytical Chemistry R&D Manager 3 serves as a Deputy to the Group Leader and assists in establishing a vision and path for the future of the Actinide Analytical Chemistry group (C‐AAC). There are three Deputy Group Leader positions in C-AAC, with an emphasis in each of the group’s three primary operating facilities. The Deputy Group Leaders partner with the C‐AAC group office staff to provide strong scientific and technical leadership as well as operational, financial and administrative management for the Group. These responsibilities include ensuring compliance with work authorization, radiation protection, nuclear materials safeguards, criticality safety, instrument qualification, and safety basis requirements. Deputy Group Leaders support the Group Leader to provide leadership to the Group's multiple programmatic activities, and effectively champion C‐AAC capabilities and personnel.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Direct experience performing, directing, developing, or auditing an analytical measurement quality assurance/quality control program

  • Thorough knowledge of and experience with implementation of policies, procedures, and systems.

  • Thorough knowledge of and proven ability in budget preparation and overall budget management including personnel forecasting and tracking

  • Ability to meet DOE Order 426.2 requirements for a management position in a Hazard Category 2 nonreactor nuclear facility:

  • 4 Years of nuclear experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The degree may fulfill 3 of the 4 years of nuclear experience on a one‐for‐one basis. The first year of deputy group leader position may be used to fulfill the final year of required experience.

  • Ability to obtainaDOE Q clearance, which usually requires US citizenship.

  • In addition to a resume, candidates must submit a cover letter addressing the specificrequired and desired skills.

Education/Experience : Position requires a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution and 5 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • MS, or PhD degree in analytical chemistry from an accredited institution

  • Broad experience with the application of destructive (and non-destructive?) analytical and radio-analytical chemistry methods for nuclear material characterization

  • Four years of experience performing or directing operations in a nuclear/radiological environment

  • Direct experience in the development, modification, or usage of software products (e.g. LIMS) for recording, compiling, organizing, and reporting analytical data sets

  • Demonstrated success in forging cross-organizational partnerships across multiple levels of management

  • Strong record of technical excellence and achievement as demonstrated through publications, reports, and presentations at national/international meetings

  • A record of achievement in the effective implementation of Conduct-of-Operations

  • Demonstrated experience managing Nuclear (or radiological) Material workers

  • Active DOE Q clearance

  • Participation in the Human Reliability Program (HRP)

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements

  • for access to classified matter.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. SeeDOE Order 472.2for additional information.

HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.

426.2: This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the required period of continuous service, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader.
