What You Will Do_

The successful candidate will take a leading role in P-24’s Engineering Team by engineering complex instruments, leading and managing projects, recruiting and developing staff, interacting with customers, and developing new projects.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements: (skills necessary to do the job)_

  • Demonstrated ability to design, fabricate, install, and operate precision scientific instruments

  • Ability to communicate orally with project stakeholders

  • Ability to summarize project completion in a written report or peer-reviewed publication

  • Experience working with vendors and fabrication shops.

  • Experience managing a medium to large-scale project involving several engineers and scientists

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering

  • Ability to obtain a Q clearance, which usually requires US citizenship

Desired Skills(skills that are nice to have, but not necessary)

  • Experience working with a facility that has very formal operations

  • Familiarity with one or more of the nation’s HED facilities – NIF, Omega, or Z

  • Experience managing one or more staff

  • Professional Engineer (PE) status

  • Knowledge of LANL’s purchasing system

  • Familiarity with nuclear detectors and diagnostics

  • Familiarity with x-ray detectors and diagnostics

  • Experience working with non-local customers

  • Familiarity with Solid Works

  • Advanced degree in engineering or engineering management

  • Active Q clearance

Education Required:A bachelor’s degree in Mechanical engineering from an accredited university.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter.

Where You Will Work_

Located in northern New Mexico, Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in strategic science on behalf of national security. LANL enhances national security by ensuring the safety and reliability of the U.S. nuclear stockpile, developing technologies to reduce threats from weapons of mass destruction, and solving problems related to energy, environment, infrastructure, health, and global security concerns.

P-24’s engineering team designs, builds, and fields advanced instrumentation for both internal and external customers. The team built neutron imaging and gamma-ray detector systems for the National Ignition Facility, as well as gated x-ray detectors. The team also built many x-ray, particle, and optical instruments for the Omega laser facility. Other customers include AWE, the plutonium facility, and LANSCE.
