What You Will Do
The Weapon Systems Engineering Division Production Liaison Group is the Design Agency (DA) representative to the NNSA Nuclear Security Enterprise (NSE) Production Agencies (PA) and is responsible for the oversight and execution of design definition and configuration management of the LANL-designed nuclear explosive package production at the PAs.
This will be a permanent duty station at the National Security Campus (NSC) located near Kansas City Missouri. The successful applicant will work closely with the NSC PA personnel at all levels to ensure design requirements are fulfilled throughout the development, process prove-in, and production phases.
The successful candidate will be required to:
Primary responsibilities will be in support of weapons component production, W76 LEP production, the B61 LEP qualification and production, W88 Alteration 370 qualification and production and future system studies. Activities may include assisting with hardware provisioning for local, joint, and hydro tests, and system engineering support for Product definition.
Provide the primary technical interface between the NSC PA and the LANL Design Agency systems engineering and physics communities.
Provide guidance to assist with production activities (manufacture and assembly) for weapon components and systems.
Work directly with the PA to resolve issues relating to nuclear weapon production and integrity.
Provide engineering expertise and resolve technical and programmatic issues associated with weapons systems as deemed appropriate by the W-8 Group Leader.
Interface with colleagues at other laboratories and their contractors and the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA).
Participate in PA Site Reviews and Parts Status meetings.
Coordinate and approve PA procedure/process changes.
Participate as required in the Qualification of production activities, Product Realization Teams (PRT) and issuance of Engineering Authorizations (EAs).
Mentor less experienced personnel, team with other personnel across the NSE, and present work objectives and results at all levels to internal and external management and customers.
Lead PRTs during the concurrent engineering/process development, process prove-in, engineering evaluation, qualification and production phases.
Represent LANL at numerous programmatic meetings and assist as the lead and/or participate in any special projects required by LANL management.
Support scaled experiment production efforts.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Demonstrated application of engineering principles providing solutions in one or more of the following disciplines; material science, mechanical engineering, or chemical engineering.
Demonstrated experience of assembly and inspection techniques applicable to the W76, B61, W88 or the W78 Weapon System.
Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimum supervision, as well as the ability to be an effective member of a multidisciplinary team.
Demonstrated ability to interpret mechanical drawings and specifications.
Demonstrated ability to meet schedule and deliverables for multiple concurrent projects with a range of priorities.
Demonstrated record of developing and fostering successful cross-organizational teams to solve complex problems.
Demonstrated excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills;
Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with all levels of National Security Enterprise (NSE) personnel including internal and external customers to provide solutions to complex problems.
Desired Skills(skills that are nice to have, but not necessary)
Knowledge of the W76, B61, W88 and W78 weapon systems with regards to production and surveillance. An understanding of nuclear physics principles is desirable.
Experience with the engineering authorization system, document management systems (e.g., PDM Link) and applications to stockpile maintenance.
Demonstrated experience interacting with one or more NSE Production Agencies.
Demonstrated experience managing execution of large-budget programmatic efforts using standard project controls’ principles.
Derivative Classifier (DC) experience.
Education:A minimum of a BS in engineering from an ABET accredited college or university required. Typical educational requirement is an advanced degree in engineering from an accredited college or university.
