What You Will Do
This position will be filled at the R&D; Engineer 1, R&D; Engineer 2 or R&D; Engineer 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level. As a member of the AOT-RFE high power RF Engineering team, the successful candidate will, working closely with other engineers and technicians, be responsible for the operation, troubleshooting, and maintenance of the LANSCE 201 and 805 MHz high power RF vacuum tube amplifier systems, including associated electronics and high voltage power supplies, and for providing power electronics expertise to all segments of the group, particularly in areas related to vacuum tube amplifiers and the equipment required to operate them. The position also involves planning and implementing future RF system upgrades, e.g., amplifiers to enable the installation of an RFQ, supporting LANSCE physicists and scientists on special projects, and analyzing RF system data to inform design enhancements for improving reliability and performance. The successful candidate is also expected to provide ‘on call’ support for the LANSCE high power RF amplifier systems after hours and on weekends. The ‘on-call’ assignment will typically be for one week per month while the accelerator is operating (approximately 7 months per year).

Demonstrated undergraduate training in electrical engineering fields that support competency in microwave engineering, high voltage engineering or the design of RF amplifier systems, microwave and RF components, RF transmitters, or RF transport systems.
Demonstrated experience in effectively producing written documents and successful oral communication skills
Demonstrated ability to read and understand schematics
Additional Job Requirements for R&D; Engineer 2 ($87,800- $144,800) In addition to the Job Requirements outlined above, qualification at the R&D; Engineer 2 level requires:
Demonstrated record of contributions to the design, development, testing, and installation of high power RF vacuum tube based amplifier systems.
Demonstrated experience in developing concepts for RF vacuum tube based amplifier systems.
Demonstrated technical abilities in the design and development RF vacuum tube based amplifier systems.
Demonstrated experience working as part of a team to develop RF amplifier systems.
BSEE and 4 years of experience or MSEE and 1 year of experience (Master’s Thesis and/or relevant internships would be considered)
Demonstrated recent and successful hands on troubleshooting, installation, and testing experience for high power RF systems.
Additional Job Requirements for R&D; Engineer 3 ($96,600- $161,300) In addition to the Job Requirements outlined above, qualification at the R&D; Engineer 2 level requires:
Demonstrated record of leading the design, development, testing, and installation high power RF vacuum tube based amplifier systems
Demonstrated technical leadership in developing advanced concepts for high power RF vacuum tube based amplifier systems.
Demonstrated record of developing innovative high power RF vacuum tube based amplifier systems concepts.
Demonstrated record of conducting engineering design in accordance with defined procedures for conduct on engineering.
Demonstrated skills in applying the system engineering process to defining requirements and translating those requirements into designs that meet customer expectations.
BSEE and 8 years of experience or an MSEE and 4 years of experience.
Operations experience at an accelerator facility
Experience with programmable logic controllers
Experience with pulsed power
Experience with high voltage systems

Education:R&D; Engineer 1, 2 & 3 Education Required:Typical educational requirement is a bachelor’s, master’s or doctorate degree from an ABET accredited engineering college or university program. Preference may be given to Electrical Engineering Degrees.

The Accelerator Operations and Technology (AOT) Division provides leadership in accelerator science, engineering, and operations in support of National User Facilities and in solving national security challenges. A principal element of the division's portfolio is operation, maintenance, and improvement of the accelerator, injector, beam transport, linear accelerators, proton storage ring, and targets of the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE), a multipurpose National User Facility that provides intense neutron and proton pulsed beams to support multidisciplinary fundamental and applied research and medical radioisotope production. AOT’s Radio Frequency Engineering (AOT-RFE) Group provides expertise, support, and technical leadership in high power RF systems, high voltage systems, pulsed power systems, low level RF feedback and feedforward systems, and magnet power supply systems. AOT-RFE’s primary focus is the design, development, and maintenance of these systems for the LANSCE User Facility. This includes participation in current and future projects such as the MaRIE, the Matter-Radiation Interaction in Extremes experimental facility which leverages the existing LANSCE proton linear accelerator and requires the installation of a new 12 GeV electron linear accelerator for a 42 keV free electron laser (FEL).
