What You Will Do
The selected applicants will use their knowledge of mechanical engineering principles to solve problems and execute an interesting, diverse and complex array of projects to meet the needs of Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) and our external customers. Applicants will be expected to have a minimum of a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering , or a related field.
These positions will be filled at either the Research and Development Engineer 1 and/or 2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
Entry Level - Mechanical Engineer (R&D Engineer 1) ($85,400 - $139,600)
Successful applicants will perform the following duties in this position:
Apply engineering principles as they relate to experimental techniques
Provide insight, expertise, and direction of manufacturing and assembly processes used in fabrication, including material selection, machining methods/equipment selection, tooling/fixtures, inspection and assembly techniques
Author engineering documents such as test plans, test procedures, test reports and engineering requirements
Solve straightforward mechanical engineering problems in support of hardware design and/or testing : o Designing test hardware, fixturing and tooling o Completing engineering analyses for test hardware design and test planning o Determining instrumentation and data acquisition solutions o Completing uncertainty analyses
Demonstrate excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
Promote a strong collaborative work environment
Entry Level - Mechanical Engineer (R&D Engineer 2) ($94,100 - $155,700)
In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this levelthe successful applicant will:
Lead small project teams, providing technical leadership and oversight in planning and execution
Solve complex engineering problems in support of hardware design and/or testing
Demonstrate and promote team building and collaboration as well as conflict resolution
Interact with all levels of personnel and customers, with demonstrated ability to organize, prioritize, and follow through to completion on multiple tasks under strict deadlines and changing priorities.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Basic understanding of CAD modeling and drawing creation
Basic understanding of the scientific method and how to utilize it for mechanical hardware testing
Basic understanding of mechanical engineering design principles
Successful experience working in an integrated team environment
Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
Ability to accomplish technical tasks while working independently as well as in a team environment with other engineers, scientists, and technicians.
Additional Job Requirements for Entry Level - Mechanical Engineer (R&D Engineer 2):
Demonstrated technical experience in design engineering including experience applying engineering practices and principles; providing innovative, practical solutions to a wide variety of complex design problems such as : experimental testing, high precision alignment, thermal optimization, vacuum systems, and/or hardware packaging optimization.
Experience applying finite element, analytical, or empirical methods in experimental design. Knowledge of fundamental engineering principles and their application to experimental work, obtaining data from measurement systems involving one or more of the following response types: acceleration, strain, displacement, pressure and temperature.
Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering (or another closely related engineering field) from an ABET accredited institution and 2 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation (including relevant experience gained in pursuit of a degree).
Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering (or another closely related engineering field) from an ABET accredited institution and 4 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation (including relevant experience gained in pursuit of a degree).
Experience using Creo
Experience with geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) of mechanical hardware
Knowledge in the use of specialized engineering software such as Mathcad, MATLAB, LabView, Origin, or other similar software
System and subsystem qualification testing or analysis experience
Active DOE or DOD security clearance

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
