Los Alamos National Laboratory Radiography Experimental Postdoc in Los Alamos, New Mexico
What You Will Do
The Dynamic Imaging and Radiography Group (P-1) at Los Alamos National Laboratory has an immediate opening for a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center's proton radiography facility (pRad). pRad uses 800-MeV protons, combined with a magnetic-lens imaging system, to provide multi-frame radiographic data of rapidly-evolving dense, dynamic systems. The types of dynamic experiments performed include high-explosive (HE) equation of state, HE-driven spall and instability growth, shocked compression of condensed matter, powder-gun driven turbulence and equation of state studies, and HE detonation front characterization, among other applications. We seek an outstanding candidate with a solid physics background, and a desire to apply their expertise to the advancement of proton radiography techniques, analysis and methods.
The Dynamic Imaging and Radiography Group (P-1) in Physics Division is a diverse group of experimental physicists, engineers, technicians, and students engaged in a range of fundamental and applied research in: nuclear physics beyond the Standard Model, weapons physics, imaging, diagnostic development, and radiography. Group members specialize in the application of state-of-the-art techniques in particle and light detection and the recording of transient events. We support a diverse program that includes scientists of many nationalities and backgrounds, participation in experiments worldwide, sponsorship of workshops and conferences, unclassified and classified experiments, and analyses.
The LANL Postdoctoral Program is a pipeline for hiring technical staff at the Laboratory, many of whom first joined LANL as postdocs. The Laboratory encourages its postdoc mentors to help their postdocs explore possibilities for conversion to a permanent staff position.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
The successful candidate must have an experimental background in physics
Strong communication and language skills, as evidenced by publications, presentations, and the cover letter
Ability to obtain and maintain a US Department of Energy (DOE) Q Clearance, which typically requires US Citizenship.
Skills in the following areas are desired for the successful candidate
Experience with any imaging modality, including techniques such as x-ray, CT, NMR, ultrasound or charged particle radiography
Experience with accelerator beamline transport and development
Experience and familiarity with vacuum systems and/or laser systems in a physics environment
Programming experience with MATLAB, IDL, C++, and/or Python
Education: A Ph.D. (completed in 2016 or later) in physics or a related field is required
