What You Will Do

The successful candidate will work closely with a diverse group of engineers, scientists, technologists, and technicians on projects and programs for both internal and external customers. Interpersonal communication and teamwork are important elements of this work environment, as is a commitment to LANL’s safety and security culture.

The successful candidate will be assigned to the radiation effects and reliability team. This team provides radiation effects and reliability assessments for space payloads for internal and external customers. The successful candidate will team with other ISR engineers/scientists in project areas such as:

  • Single-event effects testing

  • Total ionizing dose testing

  • Radiation effects analysis

  • Hardware reliability analysis

The successful candidate will work with other organizations to ensure programs are supported and deliverables are met. Strong documentation (writing) skills and ability to present technical information to a wide audience through formal and informal technical interactions are crucial in this role. The successful candidate will work regularly in a classified setting, and must demonstrate a strong commitment towards security. Domestic/Foreign travel is periodically required based on programmatic needs. The successful candidate will be self-motivated, with good communication, documentation, and teaming skills.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • A strong background in both analog and digital electronics including developing software to support such designs.

  • Demonstrated experience in single-event effect error rate calculations, and/or total ionizing dose modeling.

  • Demonstrated expertise in radiation effects, reliability, and electrical design (8+ years of work experience).

  • Demonstrated experience of successful execution of complex tests and experiments, including publishing reports.

  • Demonstrated experience in creative problem solving.

  • Strong presentation skills and experience interacting with all levels of personnel and customers.

  • Experience with computer programming languages such as C/C++, python, R, etc.

  • Knowledge and experience relative to uncertainty and/or risk analysis.

Desired Skills:

  • Ability to design custom test boards.

  • Knowledge/experience of statistical analysis techniques.

  • Demonstrated experience in secure work environment or working with sensitive or classified information.

  • Active Q clearance.

Education: B.S., M.S. or Ph.D., in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering from an ABET accredited engineering college or university program. Higher-level degree or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience is desired.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter.

Located in northern New Mexico, Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in strategic science on behalf of national security. The Intelligence and Space Research Division (ISR) provides cutting edge systems in support of national and global security challenges through the creation, delivery, and support of reliable, secure, and innovative detection systems in space and around the globe by applying its diverse core capabilities in remote sensing technologies, satellite command, control and mission processing, and on-board and real-time signal processing.

ISR-3, the Space Data Science and Systems Group, provides the computer engineering, software engineering, and computer science capability for ISR's national security and spaced-based and ground missions. This includes the development of embedded flight software, data acquisition systems, ground station development, and support of on-orbit payload operations. Support is provided for complete multi-year life-cycles including the development of space-based data processing, data analysis, and data analytics.
