Los Alamos National Laboratory Quality Assurance Specialist (Development and Fabrication Tec 5) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The Space Instrument Realization group (ISR-5) is Los Alamos National Laboratory’s hands-on hardware group that builds, tests and delivers satellite instruments. Major ISR programs include space‐based nuclear detonation detection (SNDD) programs, Agile Space (cube sat) programs, as well as Planetary and Space Exploration programs which feature prominent instruments on the Mars Curiosity and Perseverance Rovers. We are seeking a Quality Assurance Specialist to lead our hardware quality assurance activities to support our various satellite instrument projects. You will report to the QA Team Leader and will be responsible for working with fabricators in our Fab Shop as well as interfacing with project engineers and leaders to ensure our electrical assemblies meet IPC acceptance standards and various project requirements.

The Quality Assurance Specialist will be the Lead Hardware Quality Inspector for all programs, including component incoming inspection, in-process inspections and final flight inspections. You will maintain Certified IPC Trainer credentials and ensure all fabricators’ certifications are up to date. Communication is important as you will be providing feedback and guidance to fabricators on best practices on soldering technique and acceptance criteria. You will communicate daily with engineers and project leaders on inspection progress and all quality issues, as well as interpreting quality acceptance policy and procedures for ISR staff.

In addition to the above, duties will also include support corrective action tracking processes, as well as support development of ISR records management activities. You will ensure that electrical products meet quality specifications and are completed according to the established requirements. Additionally, you will monitor the certification of all EDS Protected Areas and recertify as needed, including leading a team of technicians to perform the inspections. The Quality Assurance Specialist will also integrate new technologies into our Quality Inspections processes including automated cable testing.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Job Knowledge : Experience with SMT & TH solder inspection, IPC-A-610, J-STD-001, electronics assembly processes and equipment. The ability to understand and interpret various physical, mechanical, and electrical documents, blueprints, drawings, and schematics.

Customer Service : Ability to positively interface with customers, corporate management, engineers and technicians.

Technical Knowledge : Technical knowledge in the application of engineering, procurement, testing and operations sufficient to comprehend specified engineering, procurement, testing, operations requirements.

Communication : Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Quality Assurance : 2 years of direct IPC quality assurance inspection experience, preferably in an aerospace and defense environment.

Clearance Ability : Ability to obtain a Q clearance.

Training/Certifications: Additional consideration may be given to professionally recognized training and certifications in related fields.

Education/Experience : This position requires an AS degree in engineering, or related field and/or a minimum of 10 years of experience in a related field of electronics.

Desired Qualifications:

System experience : Demonstrated experience with development, integration and test of space systems. Experience with ESD controls ANSI/ESD S20.20 and moisture sensitive devices J-STD-033

Quality Assurance : Ability to communicate major elements of quality assurance to both technical and non-technical personnel. 5 years of direct quality IPC quality assurance inspection experience, preferably in an aerospace and defense environment.

Clearance : Active Q and/or SCI clearance

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 .
