What You Will Do
The successful candidate will have the responsibility of line management of the Technology Development Group (Q-18) at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). The successful candidate will direct the Q-18 team and work with other LANL organizations to lead operational, technical and programmatic work associated with the development and delivery of design-to-manufacturing of technical products to meet current and future nuclear weapons needs for the Nation’s stockpile. This position will support the principal interface and single point of contact within the technology maturation community with leadership at other laboratories and with programmatic peers in the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) and Department of Defense (DoD). The successful candidate will represent LANL at meetings and will work with other members of the leadership team to consolidate multi-system technology maturation scopes to improve prioritization and management of activities and to ensure components are reliable and costs are minimized.
Other responsibilities include ongoing leadership of the Q-18 team members, program planning and development, long-range budget preparation and justification, planning integration with other program elements in overall support of stockpile stewardship objectives, and ongoing program management, including program reviews and earned value reports. The selected candidate will provide technical, managerial and programmatic leadership and strategic planning for technology development activities as part of the national program, including physics (theoretical and experimental), materials, production, and surveillance across all Laboratory organizations. Frequent travel may be required based on programmatic needs.

Prior experience with weapons in the current nuclear stockpile, production, systems, physics, or surveillance, or high-explosive behavior.
Experience with NNSA quality principles including the Integrated Product Team (IPT) process.
Knowledge of LANL financial, project controls, and procurement systems.
Active Q clearance.
Minimum requirement is a BS in science or engineering.
MS or PhD in Mechanical, Nuclear, Aerospace, or Systems Engineering, Engineering Mechanics, or a closely related technical field preferred.

Where You Will Work
Located in northern New Mexico, Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in strategic science on behalf of national security. LANL enhances national security by ensuring the safety and reliability of the U.S. nuclear stockpile, developing technologies to reduce threats from weapons of mass destruction, and solving problems related to energy, environment, infrastructure, health, and global security concerns.
The Weapon Stockpile Modernization Division (Q) provides the system engineering, program management, component technology development and system/sub-system testing necessary to field the modernizations authorized to extend the life of the Los Alamos National Laboratory’s assets in the active United States nuclear stockpile. Currently, these modernizations are directed at the B61 and the W88. This role demands expertise in design, engineering, fabrication and testing of multiple components using state-of-the-art computational simulation tools and engineering test facilities. The Division works in close liaison with the several production facilities across the nuclear security complex as well as with the customers in the US Navy and Air Force. The Division is also tasked with broadly anticipating the scope of possible future modernizations and with enabling the various technology advances that they might require.
The Advanced Systems Development Group (Q-18) is responsible for system and sub-system technology development that is directed toward application of improved weapon system safety and use-control performance; design of advanced systems that reduce age-related degradation, improved reliability, and reduced system lifecycle maintenance. The Q-18 group is comprised of three integrated teams: 1. Systems Engineering Design, 2. Surety Systems, and 3. System Safety Assessment Methodologies. The Systems Engineering Design and Surety Systems teams draw from subject matter experts resident at LANL and from across the nuclear weapons enterprise to prove technical design support for: experimental design, testing and computational analysis, materials engineering, fabrication for small component level to full scale prototypes and test articles, test article assembly, and mechanical and electrical design.
