Los Alamos National Laboratory Prototype Fabrication Manufacturing Group Machinist 3 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

Prototype Fabrication Manufacturing Group (PF-MFG) is seeking qualified Machinists that will provide machining support for the fabrication of components both in a classified and unclassified environment in support of a variety of key laboratory missions. The machinist will be required to work from complex drawings, sketches, CAD models, and/or verbal instructions to facilitate the manufacture of parts and assemblies by programming, setting up, and operating manual and CNC mills and lathes, EDM and a variety of general machine shop tooling. They will manufacture complex parts made from difficult materials with exacting tolerances.

The selected candidate will work in a team environment to provide fabrication services for a variety of customers both internal and external to the Laboratory related to nuclear weapons programs.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Drawings & Specifications

Ability to read and interpret drawings and sketches which use Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) symbols, to determine design factors such as size, shape, position and arrangement of features and parts comprising assemblies. Ability to interpret specifications and determine how they relate to the manufacturing of the component and/or assembly.


Use your knowledge of conventional, CNC and advanced manufacturing techniques to produce parts with a high degree of difficulty and tight tolerances, typically +/- .0005. Skilled knowledge of applied shop mathematics, proficient in understanding machining processes, tools, and operations to obtain various tolerances. Knowledge of applied material properties. Ability to create CAD/CAM files or G&M Code. Must be willing to work with hazardous materials.

Customer Service

Provide excellent customer service by creating manufacturing drawings or sketches for the production of hardware while also troubleshooting customer provided drawings and provide recommendations for revision to enhance manufacturability. Ability to effectively communicate with customers to extract design intent.

Dimensional Inspection Knowledge

Ability to perform basic precision measurements on parts using inspection tools such as calipers, micrometers, verniers, and others.

Tools & Operating Knowledge

Ability to operate manual and powered lifting equipment/ devices.

Communication, Teamwork, and Safety

Demonstrated effectiveness in communication and teaming with peers, customers, and technicians as appropriate to achieve or negotiate work requirements. Ability to follow guidelines for working safely in an industrial manufacturing environment.

Education/Experience : Associates degree (AAS) in Machining Technologies or equivalent precision metalworking program AND 4 years’ experience OR Journeyperson qualification program AND 2 years’ experience.

Additional Tools & Systems

CAD/CAM experience, preferably SolidWorks/CAMWorks and Pro-E/Pro-M.

Clearance: DOE Q Clearance highly desirable
