Los Alamos National Laboratory Proton Radiographic lens Modeling and Development Postdoc in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The Proton Radiography, Applications and Development Group (P-26) at Los Alamos National Laboratory has an immediate opening for a Postdoctoral Research Associate. The LANL proton radiography facility operates at the 800-MeV Los Alamos Neutron Science Center Linac, desired by its diverse user base for its ability to provide multi-frame radiographic data of dense, dynamic systems with inter-frame temporal resolution down to 150 ns. The Postdoc will work on the development of novel proton radiographic lensing solutions, including, specifically, the development of an achromatic beam lines and achromatic imaging lens. The latter leverages the ability of an achromat to image across a broad depth-of-focus, representing a new radiographic capability.

We seek a candidate with a background in accelerator beam line design and/or analysis, and a desire to apply their expertise to the advancement of proton radiography. Experience in the application of machine learning to the tuning of beam delivery structures is desirable, but not required.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Education: A Ph.D. in physics, accelerator physics, medical physics or a closely-related field earned within 5 years of the anticipated start date.

Safety Practice: Demonstrated ability to work safely and productively with minimal supervision.

Communication: Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills, interpersonal skills, and experience interacting with personnel at all levels. Ability to explain and present technical information, both verbally and in written form, to an audience with varied technical backgrounds.

Clearance: Ability to obtain and maintain a US Department of Energy (DoE) Q Clearance, which typically requires US citizenship.

Desired Qualifications:

Technical Knowledge: Experience with beamline transport modeling and development, non-destructive evaluation and testing (X-ray CT, NMR/MRI).

Systems & Tools: Experience with beam modeling software, COSY Infinity, MADX, transport, or other. Experience with data analysis software such as, but not limited to: Python, MATLAB, or ImageJ.
