Los Alamos National Laboratory Project Engineer 1/2 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

Position(s) will be filled at the Project Engineer 1 and 2 level, depending on the skills/experience of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher levels.

The successful candidate will be expected to perform the following duties of this position, but are not necessarily limited to:

  • Adheres to engineering policies, programs, procedures and practices.

  • Uses and applies principles, theories, concepts and techniques within discipline and of other related fields to perform work.

  • Resolves a wide range of issues in creative ways. Provides resolutions to a diverse range of complex problems where analysis of data requires evaluation of identifiable factors.

  • Plans engineering assignments to include estimates for engineering staffing, quantities, scope reviews, schedules on a project. Has technical responsibility for interpreting, organizing, executing, and coordinating these assignments.

  • Demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions

  • Resolves field-initiated questions on engineering, visits jobsite, as required, for exchange of information.

  • Coordinates engineering effort with project manager, procurement, construction, startup, environment, safety, health, and project controls, when assigned.

  • Reviews project engineering progress against approved schedules, evaluates changes and takes corrective action when required.

  • Makes recommendation to engineering management of key personnel for project assignments, initiate requests for specialized professional services.

  • Ensures that technical risk assessments are comprehensive and complete, safety practices and procedures are implemented, and engineering design and corresponding design documentation are in compliance with project quality assurance plan and procedures

  • Communicates complex technical issues and recommends solutions to client, project and functional management as directed and as appropriate.

  • Develops statement of work. Establishes project assumptions and constraints. Establishes key milestones and deliverables, and develops summary budget. Inputs to and owns the engineering elements of a project capital estimate (proposals and execution) quantities and budgets.

  • Plans, forecasts and identifies necessary engineering resources to support project workload requirements. Coordinates activities among the design groups on the project.

  • Other duties as defined by the Project or Functional Manager.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Project Engineer 1 ($80,100 - $131,000)

  • Knowledge of engineering design processes and procedures.

  • Knowledge of industry codes and standards

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills required.

  • Desktop automation skills required (MS Office Suite).

  • Bachelor of Science degree in engineering or architecture for an ABET College

  • Must have a minimum of 2 years of engineering/architecture experience.

Project Engineer 2 ($87,800 - $144,800)

In addition to the job requirements outlined for a Project Engineer-1 above, the Project Engineer-2 requirements are as follows:

  • Knowledge of project engineering processes and procedures consistent with the duties described above.

  • Understands the standard engineering work planning, scheduling and cost estimating, and conducts independent work requiring judgment in the application of engineering techniques.

  • Working knowledge of related non-reactor nuclear codes, standards, best practice non-nuclear nuclear/hazardous mechanical confinement systems.

  • Demonstrated experience with development of designs and modifications to operating non-reactor nuclear facilities.

  • Minimum of 6 years of Engineer/Architecture experience.

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience as a Project Engineer.

Desired Skills:Knowledge of relevant LANL standards, provides field implementation of the Conduct of Engineering (COE) Program.

Clearance: Q(Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter.
