Los Alamos National Laboratory Professional Staff Assistant 3 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

Come and join the brightest minds at the most innovative R&D facility supporting our national security! Los Alamos National Laboratory is looking for a creative Professional Staff Assistant 3 (PSA3) to support the National Security Education Center (NSEC). As a senior PSA you will work primarily with the NSEC Program Manager leading the “Office for University Research and Joint Appointments” to execute its technical/scientific and operational portfolio. In this role, you will support execution of the Laboratory’s university Joint Appointment Program, support implementation of NSEC’s strategy for regional academic collaborations, and support execution of the Laboratory’s Institutional Agreement with the three New Mexico research universities through the New Mexico Consortium (NMC).

Additional responsibilities of the PSA3 include providing advanced-level support to the NSEC management team in the areas of project planning, university subcontracts, human resources, procurement, staffing, quality, property management, facility interface, financial issues critical to group management, and solving other problems of advanced complexity. The PSA will maintain a professional office atmosphere and assume responsibility with minimal supervision, demonstrating accuracy and attention to detail, initiative, versatility, tact, and confidentiality in all matters. The successful candidate must be a motivated performer, capable of working quickly, changing focus, acting independently, and comfortable with a broadly defined scope of work. Work is conducted in a busy, fast-paced team environment that requires close cooperation, adaptability, taking initiative in completing tasks and a willingness to provide support where needed.

The National Security Education Center (NSEC) facilitates science and engineering education and research through strategic research and education centers, academic partnerships, and student programs. NSEC serves as an interactive hub for students, postdocs, and visiting faculty from around the world to collaborate on research and exchange ideas with Laboratory technical staff. Participants engage in specialized education, hands-on education and training opportunities, and the development of exciting diverse research projects. NSEC establishes regional academic collaborations through Joint Appointment programs with regional and national universities, and through a relationship with the New Mexico Consortium (NMC), a unique non-profit organization of the three New Mexico research universities formed to advance scientific research and education in New Mexico.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Advanced knowledge and ability to make recommendations in regards to the administrative management of business, operational and or programmatic activities. Experience with at least three of the following areas: business management, strategic/tactical planning, process improvements, financial management, personnel management, service subcontracts, space management, and safety/security.

  • Demonstrated experience taking initiative, attention to detail, researching, analyzing, and working to develop resolutions to complex issues in a manner that fosters institutional values, staff productivity, and customer satisfaction.

  • Demonstrated commitment to excellence in operations, staff relations, and customer relationship management.

  • Demonstrated excellence in organizational skills to independently establish priorities and ensuring quality and confidentiality in all aspects of work while working effectively under pressure, with frequent interruptions, as well as managing projects and executing complex operational and business assignments.

  • Evidence of good interpersonal skills, leadership skills, and a record of accomplishment of building collaboration and teamwork across organizational lines as demonstrated by effectively and collaboratively working with customers across programs and organizations.

  • Using independent judgment, ability toplanlogistics, scheduling, announcements, and administrative facilitation of business, operational and/or programmatic meetings and/or conferences.

  • Demonstrated excellence in oral presentation and written communication skills.

Education: Bachelor’s degree in business related field and eight years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of directly related education and experience.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of Laboratory organizational structure, governing documents, and implementing policies and procedures; ability and experience to recommend improvements to existing business operations.

  • Knowledge and awareness of laboratory safety standards for required safety and security training, safety and security compliance, and ability to support safety and security.

  • Knowledge and awareness of the collection of and dissemination of program metrics.

  • Active DOE Q clearance.

Location: This position will be physically located in Los Alamos, NM.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year .

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements

  • for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. SeeDOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
