What You Will Do
You will work with the Radiation Protection Services (RP-SVS) Health Physics Analysis Laboratories (HPAL) program analyzing samples for the presence of radioactive materials in support of the Laboratory’s Radiation Protection Program. HPAL analyzes over 200,000 samples per year for the wide variety of radioisotopes using encountered at LANL. Methods used include gas-flow proportional counting; liquid scintillation analysis; and alpha, beta, and gamma spectrometry. You will be responsible for performing radiological analyses; reviewing and reporting analytical results; calibration of instrumentation; performance and evaluation of quality control measurements; maintenance of radiological instrumentation; and interacting with HPAL customers. Specific duties will be assigned based on the qualifications and training of the selected candidate. Additional training and qualification will be provided as needed. Upon qualification, the selected candidate will be required to participate in on-call rotations and be able to respond during non-working hours as necessary.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Basic knowledge of radiation and radiation detection principles.
Experience operating radiation detection instrumentation such as gas-flow proportional counters and liquid scintillation counters.
Understanding and wide application of technical principles, theories, and concepts related to radiation detection and measurement.
Demonstrated high degree of attention to detail in ensuring data quality objectives.
Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team and take personal responsibility for assigned accountabilities with little supervision.
Commitment to safety, security, and customer service.
Q clearance or ability to obtain a Q clearance.
Position requires an Associate’s Degree and 3 years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to radiation detection and measurements.
Experience in radiation detection instrument calibration and maintenance.
Experience with quality assurance and quality control programs.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements
for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.
Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. SeeDOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
