The group Q-5- High Explosive Science and Technology is strongly teamwork based and very scientifically driven.
Roles and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Pressing energetic materials using either a pneumatic or hydraulic press, troubleshooting the process so parameters are met, understanding the mechanics of pressing high explosives and becoming a subject matter expert on the process.
Develop new methods for pressing energetic materials.
Work with explosives, cryogens, chemicals, pressurized systems, lasers, electrical equipment, and machine tools
Assist in set-up of various types of diagnostic and recording equipment including remote camera equipment, die measurement, surface tracking methodologies, and pressure sensing software.
Protect and maintaining sensitive or classified information
Participate in hazard analyses and assist in preparation of safety documents and work procedures.
Complete jobs in requested time frames and under correct parameters.
Interest in becoming an expert in pressing and sharing expertise with mentees and group.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Knowledgeable use of the scientific method and creative problem solving, and experience with application of fundamental chemistry, physics, and/or engineering principles.Knowledge of experimentation as well as demonstrated ability to gather, reduce and interpret collected data. Established know-how or confirmed enthusiasm/willingness to learn analytical techniques, including but not limited to particle size analysis, immersion density and sensitivity testing of high explosives. A willingness to learn and practice the safe handling of explosive materials in a rigorous safety environment, along with the ability to manage complex and collocated hazards. Established know-how or confirmed enthusiasm/willingness to learn computer-based tools for data acquisition, processing and analysis including any of the following programs: Labview, Igor Pro, Matlab, and Excel
Teamwork and Communication:
Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team environment as well as the ability to work independently, with initiative, to plan, implement and successfully complete complex long-term projects. Strong communication skills and the willingness to publish and present research at professional venues.
Requires a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Engineering or a related area and a minimum of two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Ability to understand and prepare compliance documents or maintenance procedures
Experience with instrument troubleshooting and repair
Experience in the handling, or mixing of energetic materials and formulations
Experience with common physics laboratory instruments such as balances, pressure sensors, or imaging
Hands-on experience with design and fabrication of parts by utilization of software or standard machine tools
Experience with Solid-works or other CAD-type software for designing die sets.
Experience with Finite Element Analysis software to address safety constraints in CAD drawings.
High Explosive Handler
Essential Job Functions:
Ability to smell, ability to hear in a normal range, ability to reach overhead, fine motor control, use of both hands, and the ability to lift and carry loads of 20+ pounds.
