Job Information

Los Alamos National Laboratory Postdoctoral Research Synthetic Actinide and/or Rare Earth Element Chemistry in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The Actinide Chemistry Team in the Chemistry Division is seeking outstanding candidates for a postdoctoral position in actinide and/or rare earth element chemistry to perform laboratory research involving the synthesis and characterization of thorium, uranium, and rare earth element (RRE) compounds and materials. Successful candidates will be joining a multi-disciplinary team that applies synthetic chemistry, molecular spectroscopic, and electronic structure theory to study and manipulate the unusual chemistry performed by actinide and rare earth element compounds. In this project, synthetic chemistry will be coupled with a combination of theory, electrochemistry, electronic absorption and emission spectroscopies, NMR, IR and Raman vibrational spectroscopies.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated experimental background and strong publication record in organometallic/inorganic (main group, transition metal or f-element) chemical synthesis.

  • Proven in-depth experience in the handling of air-sensitive compounds, knowledge of NMR spectroscopy, and a willingness to work with low-level radioactive natural thorium and depleted uranium materials are also required.

  • Proven strong communication and language skills, as evidenced by publications and the cover letter are required.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently in a complex work environment.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience with electrochemistry, electronic absorption and emission spectroscopies, IR and Raman vibrational spectroscopies.

  • Experience in synthesizing and/or studying the reaction chemistry of metal fluoride and fluoride compounds/materials.

  • Experience in metal separations chemistry.

Education: A Ph.D. in chemistry. The candidatemusthave completed all Ph.D. requirements by commencement of the appointment and be within 5 years of completion of the Ph.D.

Clearance: Ability to obtain aQ clearance. (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements
