Los Alamos National Laboratory Polymer Characterization and Processing Master Student in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The Chemical Diagnostics and Engineering (C-CDE) at the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) has an opening for a student in the area of polymer-based materials characterization. The selected candidate will be part of a multi-disciplinary team supporting a broad range of characterization and analysis activities of polymer-based materials and their composites with ceramics and/or metals.

The candidate will engage in one or more of the following areas:

  • Development of polymer-based composite materials and films.

  • Fabrication of various configurations of membranes with tunable microporosity.

  • Generation of physical property data to aid in the development of predictive structure-function relationships.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated knowledge with the safe and proper handling of hazardous chemicals, and hands-on experience in synthetic chemistry

  • Experience using laboratory equipment and analytical instrumentation, particularly for chemical analysis

  • Fluent in common software packages like Microsoft (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook)

  • Demonstrated strong verbal and written communication skills

  • Must submit cover letter addressing how you meet the required/desired skills

Education/Experience : Eligibility is limited to students who are admitted or active in a graduate program. Students must enroll in and successfully complete a minimum of 6 graduate credit hours per semester. Eligibility is limited to students who initially have and maintain a cumulative 3.2/4.0 GPA.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team environment, and plan/organize assignments so that schedules are met on time

  • A broad background and interest in interdisciplinary science.

  • Experience with polymeric materials and polymer processing.

  • In-depth knowledge and hands-on experience in characterization techniques such as GPC, NMR, FT-IR, ATR, DSC, TGA, TG-MS, DMA

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . No Clearance: Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.
