Los Alamos National Laboratory Physics Postdoctoral Research Associate in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The P-24 Plasma Physics Group at Los Alamos National Laboratory is seeking exceptional candidate applications for postdoctoral research in the field of high-energy-density physics (HEDP), inertial confinement fusion (ICF), magneto-inertial fusion (MIF), and discovery plasma science. Los Alamos National Laboratory is a world leader in HEDP, ICF, and MIF, with P-24 conducting an exciting program of research for NNSA/DOE defense and science programs, DOE Office of Fusion Energy Sciences, and ARPA-E on both national and local experimental facilities, including the National Ignition Facility (NIF), the OMEGA laser facility at the University of Rochester, the Plasma Liner Experiment (PLX) in P-24, and the Jupiter Laser Facility at LLNL. Current research being conducted by the HED, ICF, and Magnetized Plasma Teams within P-24 include implosion physics, hydrodynamics and instabilities, warm dense matter, radiation transport, laser-plasma interactions, and x-ray and nuclear diagnostics.

What You Need

Education: A Ph.D. in experimental plasma physics or very closely related discipline, earned within the last five years.

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated ability to carry out independent and collaborative research in experimental plasma physics or a very closely related discipline, as evidenced by at least one first-author paper submitted to or published in a peer-reviewed journal.

  • Sound academic training in fundamental plasma physics.

  • Significant hands-on research experience in a laboratory plasma-physics environment.

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate both technically and interpersonally both orally and in writing.

Desired Skills:

  • Experience with building and/or operating plasma diagnostics, especially interferometry or spectroscopy.

  • Experience with maintaining/operating data-acquisition systems.

  • Experience with mechanical construction of laboratory hardware, electrical/electronic circuits, etc.

  • Experience with operating/maintaining high-voltage-pulsed-power and vacuum systems.

  • Experience with data analysis using software tools such as IDL or Matlab.

  • Familiarity with approaches and challenges of controlled fusion, especially for fusion-energy applications.

Notes to Applicants:

In addition to applying on-line, interested candidates should send their inquiries and resume to Thomas Murphy (tjmurphy@lanl.gov), for HED/ICF, Scott Hsu (scotthsu@lanl.gov), for basic plasma physics and MIF; contact Ray Leeper at rleeper@lanl.gov for more general information about the team and group.

Additional Details:

Q Clearance: Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

Candidates may be considered for a Director's Fellowship and outstanding candidates may be considered for the prestigious Marie Curie, Richard P. Feynman, J. Robert Oppenheimer, or Frederick Reines Fellowships.
