Los Alamos National Laboratory Physical Chemistry and Applied Spectroscopy Group Leader (R&D Manager 4) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

Reporting to the C-Division Leader, the Group Leader (GL) for C-PCS will provide scientific, technical, and operational leadership of a group of approximately 35 staff members, plus 20 postdocs, students, contractors, and guest scientists. As such, the GL will support a wide range of capabilities that include outdoor test sites, synthetic chemistry, materials science, ultrafast laser systems, indoor detonations, biology, joint radiochemical/biological science, device/clean room operations, machine learning, materials characterization, spectroscopy, microscopy and ptychography.

The GL is a fully funded position that will work with a half-time funded deputy group leader to provide leadership to the Group's technical and programmatic activities, and effectively champion capabilities and personnel. The successful candidate will function as a key part of the Division management team, sharing responsibility for the objectives and mission of C-Division, including planning scientific and programmatic directions, and ensuring sound management practices. S/hewill develop the Group's capabilities through effective planning, recruitment, and development of employees. The GL will oversee compliance in the areas of safety, security, environmental management, financial accountability, staffing and human resource issues, and facilities and operations.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Strong record of technical achievement, as demonstrated through publications and reports, presentations at national and international meetings, engagement in sponsor meetings or workshops, and/or leadership of large projects, in one or more of the areas relevant to the group’s activities.

  • Advanced record of technical leadership and management including technical decision-making and goal setting, supervision and personnel management, development and mentoring of employees, promoting teamwork, commitment to diversity in the workplace, and management of resources including finances.

  • Experience operating or managing in facilities that have chemical and/or radiological hazards and/or limited security areas.

  • Demonstrated ability to identify and successfully respond to new funding opportunities, program development, and assembling effective project teams across disciplinary and organizational boundaries.

  • Strong record of operational oversight and management of experimental or technical activities.

  • Ability to obtain a Q clearance, which usually requires U.S. citizenship.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated working knowledge of LANL policies in integrated work management, safety, security, quality, environment, finance, and human resources.

  • Experience in line management or program management.

  • Experience working in global security or weapons program areas.

  • Active clearance.

Education/Experience : Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution and 8 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience in Chemistry, Physics or related field.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 .
