Los Alamos National Laboratory Penetration Tester (Cybersecurity Technical Staff 4) in Los Alamos, New Mexico
What You Will Do
The NIE-ESS Computer Security Incident Response Team (CSIRT) is responsible for cyber incident response, host and network forensics, malware analysis, penetration testing, and the development of countermeasures and advanced detection techniques. As a member of CSIRT, the selected candidate will support Cyber Security penetration exercises to evaluate the security of LANL’s computing infrastructure. Responsibilities include the following:
Perform technical cyber security assessments of systems and services connected to LANL networks, and document actions, findings, and recommend corrective actions.
Develop advanced methods, techniques, and standards for penetration testing and communicate findings to multiple audiences
Independently lead work on unusually significant or complex cyber exercises, providing guidance and direction as appropriate to other cyber security personnel.
Serve as a penetration testing technical expert and interact with senior internal and external personnel.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Experience leading penetration tests including the development of rules of engagement and working with stakeholders to identify test scope.
Substantial experience performing penetration tests including technical assessment and customer communication.
Expert knowledge of operating systems, networking protocols, and firewalls including common security controls and techniques to bypass such controls.
Experience with programming or scripting languages such as C, C#, Python, Java, and PHP
Advanced experience with developing custom exploit code and with testing web applications
Strong technical writing skills.
Education/Experience : Cybersecurity Technical Staff 4 typically requires a bachelor’s degree (master’s preferred) in a technical field and a minimum of 12 years’ related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. At this level post graduate work may be expected.
Experience reverse engineering and/or fuzzing software to identify vulnerabilities
Relevant industry certifications such as GXPN, OSCE, and OSEE
Active DOE Q clearance or Department of Defense (DoD) Top Security clearance
This position will be part of the Laboratory’s Telework Pilot and may work from a remote/home location within a two-hour ground commute of the Laboratory. The Telework Pilot is in effect from Oct. 1, 2020 through Sept. 30, 2021, but may be shortened or extended at the manager’s discretion. Ability to report on-site is a must for this position.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements
for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.
Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. SeeDOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
