What You Will Do
This position will ensure safe and compliant packaging and or transportation of nuclear material, explosives, and other hazardous material transfers performed by OS-PT are in full compliance with hazardous materials regulations. Provide review and verification of hazardous material packaging's, and shipping documentation. This position interacts with and represents LANL on Hazardous Materials Packaging and Transportation (HMPT) issues with other HMPT experts in the DOE complex, National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), Department of Transportation (DOT), and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
This position will be filled at either the Packaging Specialist 3 or 4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.Packaging Specialist is responsible for the management, disposition, coordination, quality control and storage and accountability functions related to Nuclear Material, Explosives, and other Hazardous Materials and Classified Matter paragraph. The successful candidate will be expected to perform the following duties, but are not necessarily limited to:
Maintain required safety and security training, and assure safety and security compliance
May provide technical assistance to LANL customers and management on matters dealing DOE contract compliance
Understand and adhere to all Lab and industry regulatory guidance specific to facility operations
Participates in developing and implementing policies, procedures, systems, and/or forms related to the management, disposition, coordination, packaging, movement, storage, quality control and/or transportation of Nuclear Material, Explosives, other Hazardous Materials, and/or Classified Matter.
May require knowledge of leak testing standards as they apply to packaging and movement of materials
Ensure all facility operational results, materials, processes and product meet quality specification and completed according to established requirements
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Position is viewed as an expert in packaging and transportation concepts within the Laboratory and Department of Energy (DOE) complex. Assignments are often self-initiated and virtually self-supervisory. Independent judgment used for determining the course of action to accomplish objectives.
Develops and implements policies, procedures, systems, and/or forms related to the management, disposition, coordination, packaging, movement, storage, quality control and/or transportation of Nuclear Material, Explosives, other hazardous materials, and/or classified matter.
Participates as a subject matter expert in assessment activities
Certain assignments may require implementation of LANL Federal Motor Carrier Safety program requirements.
Provides input on cost effective improvements
Packaging Specialist 3 ($72,500-$118,200)
Significant experience in Nuclear Material, hazardous materials or classified matter management, disposition, coordination, packaging, and or transportation.
Knowledge/understanding of federal, state and local standards and regulations.
Knowledge/understanding of SARP requirements for various Nuclear Material, hazardous material and or classified matter packages.
Knowledge/understanding of safety basis documentation and implementation.
Demonstrated experience performing proper closure processes for packages containing hazardous material.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Position typically requires a bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Additional Job Requirements for Packaging Specialist 4 ($87,800-$144,800):
Extensive knowledge and experience in Nuclear Material, other hazardous materials, and/or classified matter, management, disposition, coordination, packaging, movement, storage, quality control and/or transportation
Expert knowledge of DOT/DOE requirements in successfully obtaining Certificates of Competent Authority, Explosive Certificates, Interim Hazardous Classifications for Explosives material, assemblies, or components.
Demonstrated experience in researching, analyzing, and recommending alternative solutions to problems
Coach/Mentor Junior employees
Minimum of 10 to 12 years of relevant experience
Knowledgeable of LANL organizational Structure
Knowledge of LANL conduct of maintenance, conduct of engineering, conduct of operations, and quality assurance programs as they apply to management, disposition, coordination, packaging, movement, storage, quality control and/or transportation of Nuclear Material, Explosives, other Hazardous Materials, and/or Classified Matter.
Knowledge of integrated work management

Where You Will Work
Located in northern New Mexico, Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is primarily responsible for monitoring the safety and reliability of the U.S. nuclear stockpile and conducting research into new defense programs. It is a center for research in a wide range of scientific disciplines, including space exploration, geophysics, renewable energy, supercomputing, medicine, and nanotechnology.
Operations Support Packaging and Transportation (OS-PT) provides packaging and transporting of hazardous and radioactive materials for LANL. Operations Services Packaging and Transportation serves as the responsible office for on-site movement of all classes of hazard materials (hazmat) and maintenance of the LANL Transportation Safety Document (TSD). Works in a highly regulated environment associated with DOE Nuclear facilities, LANL Weapons Programs and private industry in support of packaging and transportation activities.
