Los Alamos National Laboratory Nuclear Facility Process Engineer (R&D Engineer 3) in Los Alamos, New Mexico
What You Will Do
The Nuclear Materials Science (MST-16) group is seeking an outstanding, highly motivated candidate to lead process engineering and research and development activities within a Hazard Category II/III Nuclear Facility. The successful candidate will utilize engineering principles and theories to solve technical problems in support of MST-16’s scientific and programmatic deliverables. Job duties will include the following:
Lead equipment installation/demolition activities, develop work authorizing documents (operating procedures, training plans, travelers, etc.), and support operations for a variety of equipment and processes MST-16 owns
Maintain system documentation such as Process and Instrumentation Diagrams, formal calculations, operating procedures, maintenance plans, and manufacturer manuals
Serve as the interface between the group and its safety and compliance stakeholders.
Ensure that Conduct of Engineering, Conduct of Maintenance, and Conduct of Operations programs are properly implemented throughout all project phases
Able to work independently and as part of a team; and contribute to continuous process improvements to ensure both short and long term success of MST-16’s research and development missions
Act not only as the primary Process Engineer for the assigned system of equipment, but also as a reserve engineer for various systems that are managed by MST-16’s other Process Engineers
The R&D Engineer 3 will be expected to work independently to meet project/program objectives. The candidate will l ead corrective/preventative/predictive maintenance activities as well as equipment installation / commissioning activities. The successful candidate will work with and support multidisciplinary teams and provide technical support to operations through the development and maintenance of safe and efficient production Systems and Sub-Systems. The R&D Engineer 3 also be responsible for helping MST-16 meet its scientific and programmatic deliverables.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Experience in one or more of the following engineering disciplines: mechanical, electrical, chemical, or nuclear engineering.
Demonstrated commitment to technical and scientific excellence as well as timeliness of deliverables.
Ability to work with nominal supervision, as well as part of a team in a multi‐disciplinary environment, and to interact effectively with a variety of organizations and technical disciplines.
Demonstrated ability to apply knowledge of industry codes and standards.
Demonstrated ability to adhere to Laboratory engineering policies, programs, procedures, and practices, in combination with the ability to develop work authorizing documents that follow these principles within a Hazard Category II/III Nuclear facility.
Demonstrated ability to interpret, existing discipline-specific engineering and scientific principles, techniques, methods, and tools to provide solutions for a wide assortment of complex problems where analysis of situations or data requires evaluation of causal relationships.
Ability to recognize budget constraints, prioritize requirements, and identify limitations for the MST-16 organization and provide objectives for continuous improvement of MST-16 operations.
Experience with equipment configuration; developing maintenance procedures and plans; performing or assisting with post-maintenance activity tests and close-out.
Experience with developing, qualifying, and maintaining equipment and processes.
Commitment to setting direction and goals within a project involving more than one person that establish deliverables at the task level.
Demonstrated effective oral and written communication skills as evidenced by publications, presentations, or report development.
Ability to complete technical training and pass written and oral examinations towards a qualified technical position.
Ability to obtain a Q clearance.
Master’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited engineering college or university program and 6 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the position.
This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities. This DOE Order establishes entry-level requirements to ensure employees in the positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.
Understanding of Lean Manufacturing principles and disciplines such as Six Sigma or 5s
Familiarity with the Laboratory’s Conduct of Engineering, Conduct of Maintenance, and Conduct of Operations
Successful completion of a LANL Process Engineer Oral Board
Experience as a safety officer such as Pressure, Electrical, or Criticality Safety Officer.

HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.
