Los Alamos National Laboratory Nuclear and Radiochemistry Deputy Group Leader (R&D Manager 3) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

Be a part of something extraordinary by joining a dynamic team serving a world-class research and development institution! The Nuclear and Radiochemistry R&D Manager 3 serves as a Deputy to the Group Leader and assists in establishing a vision and path for the future of the Nuclear and Radiochemistry group (C‐NR). There are two Deputy Group Leader positions in C-NR, each funded at 50% time for management and the other 50% can be dedicated to science or other program activities. The Nuclear and Radiochemistry Group has approximately 80 permanent staff plus ca. 20 postdocs, students, contractors, and guest scientists. Both deputy positions will support both operational missions and R&D efforts in bioassay, nuclear forensics, nuclear nonproliferation, safeguards, treaty monitoring, and weapons programs. The group meets the needs of a diverse set of sponsors, with capabilities that include radiochemistry, actinide chemistry, radiometric analyses, materials characterization, mass spectrometry, nuclear chemistry and physics, and spectroscopy.

The Deputy Group Leaders (DGLs) will partner with the C‐NR group leader and group office staff to provide strong scientific and technical leadership as well as operational, financial and administrative management for the Group. The DGL is funded half time from overhead funds with the other half time spent on programmatic efforts. The DGLs will team with the Group Leader and group office to provide leadership to the Group's technical and programmatic activities, and effectively champion capabilities and personnel. The successful candidate will function as a key part of the division management team, sharing responsibility for the objectives and mission of the Chemistry Division, including planning scientific and programmatic directions, and ensuring sound management practices. The selected candidatewill develop the Group's capabilities through effective planning, recruitment, and development of employees. The DGL will work with the GL to oversee compliance in the areas of safety, security, environmental management, financial accountability, staffing and human resource issues, and facilities and operations.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Strong record of technical achievement, as demonstrated through publications and reports, presentations at national and international meetings, engagement in sponsor meetings or workshops, and/or leadership of large projects, in one or more of the following areas relevant to the group’s activities: analytical chemistry, inorganic chemistry, radiochemistry, nuclear chemistry, mass spectrometry, radiometric counting, spectroscopy, and actinide science.

  • Experience operating or managing in facilities that have chemical and/or radiological hazards and/or limited security areas.

  • Demonstrated ability to identify and successfully respond to new funding opportunities, program development, and assembling effective project teams across disciplinary and organizational boundaries.

  • Strong record of technical leadership and management including technical decision-making, supervision and personnel management, development and mentoring of employees, promoting team work, commitment to diversity in the workplace, and management of resources including finances.

  • Must include a CV with a publication list and a cover letter addressing your background as it fulfills the job requirements and desired skills.

  • Ability to obtain a Q clearance, which usually requires U.S. citizenship.

Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution and 5 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience in Chemistry, Physics or related field.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated working knowledge of LANL policies in integrated work management, safety, security, quality, environment, finance, and human resources.

  • Experience working in nuclear forensics, nuclear nonproliferation, treaty monitoring, or weapons program areas.

  • Active clearance.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Located in northern New Mexico, Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in strategic science on behalf of national security. Programmatic work supported by C-NR includes maintenance and stewardship of the nuclear stockpile, nuclear forensics, international safeguards, nuclear non-proliferation, treaty monitoring, and bioassay monitoring. Research is conducted in areas of radiochemistry, radiometric measurements, materials characterization, mass spectrometry, nuclear chemistry and physics, spectroscopy, and actinide chemistry. C-NR addresses immediate to long-term mission needs for sponsors, and has established capabilities and facilities for handling and characterizing radiological materials over a wide range of radioactivity levels. Current major sponsors include the Department of Energy, National Nuclear Security Administration, Strategic Partnerships (Department of Defense, Department of Homeland Security, Department of Justice, Department of State, and other federal agencies), and LANL institutional support.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements

  • for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. SeeDOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

No Clearance: Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
