Los Alamos National Laboratory Nuclear and Hazardous Materials Tec 2 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

NPI-6s CMR, RLUOB and RLWTF waste operations team is accepting application for a Nuclear & Hazardous Materials Technician to support operations at CMR, RLUOB, and RLWTF. The work will be performed in a complex environment involving radiological control and security areas. This position involves performing work both inside and outside of buildings in varying weather conditions. The successful candidate will work under direct supervision while performing hazardous and radioactive material management operations. The selected candidate will interface with teams within the group and with other groups within the TA55 FOD and the Laboratory. What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Regulations: Knowledge of applicable local, state, and federal laws and regulations relating to the handling and/or transporting of solid, liquid, radioactive or mixed wastes. Demonstrated skill in understanding work hazards, safety practices, operating configurations, and lock-out/tag-out policies and procedures.

Communication: Demonstrated experience following detailed procedures effectively, both orally and in writing and demonstrated experience in aiding in the preparation of waste handling reports.

Skills/Expertise: Experience operating mechanical equipment such as forklifts or other types of mechanical lifting devices. Demonstrated experience aiding in the preparations of reports. Demonstrated experience in proper use of personnel protective equipment including air purifying respirators.

Teamwork: Demonstrated ability to work as a team member in a conscientious, professional, and responsible manner in a multi-disciplinary environment and interacting effectively with a variety of organizations

Problem Solving: Demonstrated experience in recognizing technical problems, and applying analysis and testing, to identify suitable solutions and effectively document and communicate results.

Demonstrated ability to prioritize work tasks and manage tasks concurrently with minimal or no supervision.

Clearance and Mandatory Certifications: The ability to obtain and maintain a Q-clearance, Human Reliability Program (HRP) and Fissile Material Handler (FMH) certification.

DOE Order 426.2: DOE Order 426.2 requires high school diploma.

Education: Position requires a High School diploma and a minimum of 3 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

Skills: Demonstrated experience managing RCRA waste storage areas including knowledge of chemical storage, segregation, and handling requirements; ability to obtain certification as a forklift and incidental crane operator.

Training: Radworker, HAZWOPER, RCRA certification and the ability to obtain certification as a forklift, incidental crane operator and CDL. Site specific training at TA-55, RLWTF, RLUOB and/or CMR.

Location: This position will be physically located in Los Alamos, NM.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements

  • for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. SeeDOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.

426.2: This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
