Los Alamos National Laboratory Network Engineer (Network Professional 3/4) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Network Professional 3 or 4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

The Sensitive & Special Operations (SSO) Division provides a secure and compliant TS/SCI level environment for the execution of National Security programs through the use of classified networks and systems. The Special Security IT & Cyber Operations group (SSO-3) currently manages several classified networks and has an ongoing commitment to provide desktop, server, and network support and services to the LANL Field Intelligence Element (FIE) and other Government agency Intelligence Community users.

We are seeking an experienced network professional to join our Enterprise operations team. The Enterprise Team operates, maintains, and refines our networks, as well as building new networks, in support of user requirements. The Network Engineer contributes to this dynamic team by:

  • Work to secure network architecture of LANL’s information systems

  • Represent the best interests of LANL/FIE and the LANL customer base

  • Lead the development of network solutions for evolving customer requirements

  • Lead the development and security of the classified DOE enterprise network

  • Partner with LANL/FIE IT stakeholders, IT management, and federal oversight partners to support compliant networks

Network Professional 3 $94,100 – $155,700

As network professional 3, you will be employing your technical skills to conduct network planning and management in support of cutting edge research in the national security enterprise. Employment of the latest technology in networking protocols, network encryption, Voice Over IP, and Video Teleconferencing, as well as setting up and maintaining routers, switches and firewalls will be integral activities. Documentation of network architecture will be expected, as well as adhering to change management processes. Network engineers must be detail oriented and have an in-depth knowledge of all LAN/WAN/Enterprise network hardware and protocols, as well as routing and switching operations. Oversee diagnosis and troubleshooting activities to resolve technical problems. Perform system administration functions necessary to support day-to-day operations. Your work will directly enable the intelligence community to fulfill It’s mission.

Network Professional 4 $103,500 – $172,800

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level your leadership and management skills will be utilized to architect new network solutions to maintain pace with customer needs, and improvements in security and technology. Personal initiative, dynamic problem solving skills, as well as leadership of a diverse team will be necessary for success at this level. Independent refinement of operational requirements into network architectures through iterative design, implementation, and configuration will be part of the daily duties for this position. Integration with the overall DOE Enterprise network will be part of your daily duties. Enforcement of cybersecurity policies and running basic diagnostics for network health will be expected. Communication skills are a must, as is a forward looking and thinking attitude.

Technical Expertise

  • Proven experience in designing and implementing complex, heterogeneous networks in classified environments.

  • Extensive experience in VOIP and VTC technologies.

  • Advanced technical knowledge of contemporary network design principles

  • Understanding of industry regulatory guidance and governance specific to network security.

  • Significant experience with routing techniques and protocols, including BGP, OSPF etc.

  • Experience with configuration management tools such as Ansible

Education/Experience at lower level :Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree and 8 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, applicable advanced vendor and/or professional certification is desirable.

Additional Job Requirements for Network Professional 4:

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:

Technical Expertise

  • Expert knowledge of networking in classified environments

  • Experience composing complex network architectures, to include cyber security controls

  • Advanced knowledge of and experience in one or more of the following disciplines: computer science, information security, networking

  • Demonstrated success in supporting organizational missions through network solutions

  • Expert knowledge and experience with various VOIP and VTC systems

  • Expert knowledge of routing techniques and protocols, including BGP, OSPF etc.

  • Advanced xperience working with configuration tools such as Ansible

Communication Demonstrated success in taking initiative and implementing process improvements

  • Experience leading teams, problem analysis and resolution skills

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate complex technical issues with both technical and non-technical audiences

Education/Experience at higher level :Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree and 12 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, post graduate course work may be expected.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Advanced knowledge of institutional tools/technologies and their various applications

  • Advanced knowledge of DOE-IN and/or DOD and national policies related to information assurance

  • Technical knowledge of networking technologies and concepts

  • Experience with IT/cyber audits and assessments

  • Experience with COMSEC and TEMPEST

  • Master’s degree in a related technical field

  • Active DOE Q and TS/SCI Clearance.

Location: This position will be physically located in Los Alamos, NM .

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. SeeDOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
