Job Information

Los Alamos National Laboratory Nen-1 Safeguards Postdoctoral Research Associate in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The Safeguards Science and Technology group, NEN-1, is seeking postdoctoral researchers who are interested in one of the group’s missions listed below for a two-year appointment, with a possible third year extension. Each selected candidate will partner with LANL staff to conduct research in an area that is closely aligned with his/her academic interests and the programmatic mission of the group. The NEN-1 group supports nuclear nonproliferation through the development of technical safeguards solutions focusing on gamma-ray, neutron, and heat detection technologies in addition to other signatures relevant for identification and quantification of nuclear material under safeguards. The group currently has programs that focus on nondestructive assay technologies (neutron, gamma, and calorimetry), micro calorimetry, data analytics, mass flow measurements, environmental sampling and analysis, and nuclear material standards development. The group’s mission currently includes:

  • Developing concepts, instruments, techniques, and technologies to monitor, measure, and detect the proliferation or diversion of nuclear materials;

  • Developing algorithms to effectively analyze large and/or diverse data sets with new mathematical/statistical methods;

  • Innovation of the next generation of concepts, instrumentation, and technologies to minimize safeguards risks posed by technology advancement;

  • Provide technical expertise including educating both domestic and international nondestructive assay practitioners through hands-on training and on-site engagements.

Most NEN-1 projects are multi-disciplinary in nature and conducted in diverse technical teams. There are opportunities for technically advanced work performed here to be published in peer-reviewed journals or conference proceedings.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated experience conducting experimental R&D in physical science or engineering or demonstrated experience in implementing data analytics methods in diverse datasets.

  • Strong publication record in one or more of the following areas: nuclear engineering, physics, mechanical engineering, electrical/electronics engineering, chemistry/chemical engineering, material science, computer science, or other closely related technical field of study

  • Excellent writing and communication skills, as evidenced by publications and the cover letter

  • Self-motivated and with the ability to work effectively in a team

Desired Qualifications:

  • Expertise in a core nondestructive assay instrument or methodology used in safeguards, security, arms control, or nonproliferation verification.

  • Ability to be innovative in leveraging skills (such as the analysis of large data sets or expertise in programming) to solve difficult technical problems.

  • Demonstrated experience and in-depth understanding of quantitative measurements and uncertainty analysis for physical science or engineering, especially for radioactive or nuclear materials.

  • Demonstrated experience in material science and/or physical characterization methods

  • Demonstrated ability to teach technical concepts and methods to audiences of varied backgrounds.

  • Demonstrated ability to work successfully across various cultures and countries.

Position does not require a security clearance. However, ability to obtain and maintain a Q clearance is desirable.

Education: PhD degree in Nuclear Engineering, Physics, Electrical/Electronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Material Science, Computer Science, or a closely related technical field of study (completed within the last five years or near completion).

Note to Applicants:

For full consideration, applicants must submit a comprehensive cover letter that addresses their qualifications for the position and how their expertise fulfills the key requirements. They should also send a CV, publication list, a brief statement of research interests, and a list of three references (including phone numbers and e-mail addresses) to Alexis Trahan at atrahan@lanl.gov. For further technical information, please contact Alexis Trahan at 505-665-6248.

Candidates may be considered for a Director's Postdoc Fellowship and outstanding candidates may be considered for the prestigious Richard P. Feynman, Darleane Christian Hoffman, J. Robert Oppenheimer, or Frederick Reines Distinguished Postdoc Fellowships.

Where You Will Work

Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL)

Located in northern New Mexico, Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in strategic science on behalf of national security. LANL enhances the national security of the United States by ensuring the safety and reliability of the U.S. nuclear stockpile, developing technologies to reduce threats from weapons of mass destruction, and solving problems related to energy, environment, infrastructure, health, and global security concerns.

NEN-1 works to safeguard and secure nuclear materials by developing techniques and systems for nondestructive assay of nuclear and hazardous material. Applications include nuclear materials control and accountability, nuclear waste disposal, material stabilization efforts, and international nonproliferation efforts.

NEN-1 instrumentation and analysis technology measures nuclear materials by detecting and analyzing the neutrons, gamma rays, heat, or other signatures given off by nuclear material. NEN-1 instrument development begins with conceptual research and physics and proceeds through engineering to an industrial-quality, finished instrument.
