Los Alamos National Laboratory MERN/.NET Developer (Software Developer 2/3) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

Join our world-class software development team! Los Alamos National Laboratory is looking for a .NET and MERN tech stack software developer to join our Environmental, Safety, Health, Quality Security and Visualization Solutions Group (SAE-1) in support of the Human Resources (HR) and Institutional Quality & Performance Assurance (IQPA) divisions. Software Developer 2 ($77,300 - $126,000)

The Software Developer level 2 will report to the SAE-1 Group Leader within the Software and Applications Engineering (SAE) Division. The successful candidate must have strong experience building applications using .NET and/or the MERN tech stack, excellent organization skills, and the ability to multi-task.The successful candidate should also have a strong desire to learn new technologies and the willingness and confidence to develop safety-class, mission-critical software.

Software Developer 3 ($94,100 - $155,700)

The Software Developer level 3 will report to the SAE-1 Group Leader within the SAE Division. The candidate must be an expert .NET and/or MERN tech stack software developer, must demonstrate excellent organization skills, and the ability to multi-task.The successful candidate should be an expert in their field, have externsive experience in mentoring other junior software developers, and demonstrate the ability to architect state-of-the art web and mobile solutions.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Technical Knowledge

We are looking for someone with knowledge and experiencedesigning,developing, modifying, testing, and debugging web, mobile, and Windows applications using .NET and modern frameworks like the MERN tech stack. You should have a complete and advanced understanding of:

  • C#, VB.NET

  • JavaScript frameworks (Node.js, Vue.js, Angular.js, React, Express.js)

  • Web Service Frameworks using various protocols (REST, SOAP, WSDL, XML-RPC, XML)

  • Relational Databases (MS SQL Server, Maria DB) and NoSQL Databases (MongoDB, CouchDB, Hbase)

  • Mobile platforms, embedded database design, synchronization technologies, bi-directional replication, conflict resolution strategies, mobile UI design, and field force automation best practices

  • Automated software testing methologies (unit, integration, system, security, performance) preferably using NUnit, TFS, Azure DevOps Services and/or Cypress

  • Software version control (TFVC, Git, or GitLab) and build automation tools

  • Experience working within a team leveraging Scrum or other Agile methodologies focused on continuous improvement.

  • Experience using tools such as Atlassian Jira and Confluence to manage work


We are looking for someone who can work well in a team-oriented environment with the ability to communicate and collaborate cross-functionally within and outside of the group. In addition, you must have effective interpersonal skills for communicating technical information, building relationships, and resolving conflicts.


This position will require you to research new technologies and tools, incorporate their usage into new products and services, and mentor junior developers.

Time Management

You should have strong multitasking capabilities and the ability to work on multiple products and issues simultaneously.

Additional Job Requirements for level 3:

In addition to the requirements outlined above, as a level 3, you will be expected to lead projects and teams, mentor other developers; be expected to find solutions to complex technical issues; and be regarded as an expert .NET and/or MERN tech stack developer. We will also expect you to evaluate and recommend new tools and technology stacks to ensure that the organization is utilizing the best tools and methologies in the market.

Education/Experience at lower level

This position requiresa relevant bachelor's degree and a minimum of five years related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Education/Experience at higher level

This position requiresa relevant bachelor's degree and a minimum of eight years related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience developing solutions with both .NET and the MERN tech stack

  • Experience working with continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD)

  • Experience using Docker and Kubernetes to build container based microservices

  • Experience with C++, F#, Java, JavaScript, and Python programming languages

  • Experience managing or leading large complex projects

  • Experience upgrading, supporting, extending, and enhancing Commercial off the Shelf Products (COTS) and integrating with SaaS applications

Location: This position will be part of the Laboratory’s Telework Pilot and may work from a remote/home location within a two-hour ground commute of the Laboratory. The Telework Pilot is in effect from Oct. 1, 2020 through Sept. 30, 2021, but may be shortened or extended at the manager’s discretion. Ability to report on-site is a must for this position.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.
