Los Alamos National Laboratory Mechanical Engineer (R&D Engineer 2/3) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do_

The applicant will apply their mechanical engineering acumen to solve problems and execute an interesting, diverse and complex array of projects to meet the needs of internal and external customers. Working in the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) Applied Engineering and Technology Division (AET), the candidate will be expected to have an advanced engineering degree and appropriate experience in mechanical engineering which will be applied to the Laboratory’s core nuclear weapons, science or threat reduction missions. The candidate will have demonstrated knowledge of mechanical engineering principles related to design, experimentation, modeling/simulation and theory. The candidate will have demonstrated knowledge designing, planning and executing research and development projects.

This position will be filled at either the R&D; Engineer 2 or R&D; Engineer 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

R&D; Engineer 2 ($87,800 - $144,800)

The successful candidate will perform the following duties in this position:

  • Act in an advanced engineering role within the Mechanical and Thermal Engineering group (AET-1) in support of various Laboratory Directed Research and Development (LDRD), science, weapons and global security programs.

  • Develop new methods, technologies, sensors and analysis techniques for institutional programs, in the field of thermal engineering.

  • Serve as a leader of integrated product development teams to address engineering challenges.

  • Serve as a mentor for postdocs and students.

R&D; Engineer 3 ($96,600 - $161,300)

In addition to the duties outlined above, the R&D; Engineer 3 duties are as follows:

  • Lead an extensive and diverse set of activities across multiple engineering disciplines, including thermal engineering, or within a narrow, highly specialized field related to thermal engineering in support of engineering research and development (R&D;).

  • Develop innovative advanced concepts, theories, methods, techniques and approaches to address specialized problems in the field of thermal engineering.

  • Develop new technical capabilities and create opportunities to extend R&D; engineering through the expansion of existing efforts.

  • Serve as a mentor of early career staff, postdocs and students.

  • Advanced knowledge and experience with mechanical engineering practices.

  • Advanced experience working effectively as a team member in high intensity environments.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision and to work with coworkers with different technical backgrounds.

  • Proficiency and experience in commitment to high quality and timeliness of deliverables.

  • Ability to express ideas clearly in oral and written presentations.

  • Substantial publication evidence of high-quality written products (journals, conferences, reports, calculation-notes and test records).

Minimum Job Requirements for R&D; Engineer 3: In addition to the Job Requirements outlined above, the R&D; Engineer 3 requirements are as follows:

  • Expert knowledge and experience with mechanical engineering practices.

  • Expert knowledge of environmental analysis or testing (fluids or thermal).

  • Evidence of the ability to author proposals which result in multi-year funding for projects.

  • Evidence of the ability to lead project teams of moderate size.

Desired Skills:

  • System and subsystem qualification testing or analysis experience.

  • Advanced finite element or finite difference analysis techniques.

  • Thermal engineering graduate-level coursework or work experience.

  • Experience conducting experiments on, designing or analyzing nuclear reactor systems/subsystems.

  • PhD in mechanical engineering or related field.

  • Existing Q clearance.

R&D; Engineer 2 Education Required:Minimum MS degree in mechanical engineering (or related field) from an ABET accredited engineering college or university program and 2 years of relevant experience or PhD in mechanical engineering (or related field) from an ABET accredited engineering college or university program.

R&D; Engineer 3Education Required:Minimum MS degree in mechanical engineering (or related field) from an ABET accredited engineering college or university program and 5 years of relevant experience or PhD in mechanical engineering (or related field) from an ABET accredited engineering college or university program and 3 years of relevant experience.

Essential Job Functions: Reading vision, distance vision, ability to speak, ability to discriminate speech, ability to hear in a normal range, sitting, standing, walking, climbing stairs, typing or keyboarding.
