Los Alamos National Laboratory Materials Design Postdoc Research Associate in Los Alamos, New Mexico
What You Will Do
We are seeking a postdoctoral research associate to join our team within the Materials Physics and Applications Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) to conduct research on hybrid perovskite materials for high energy photon or charged particle detection. The aim of the project is to design, grow and characterize novel hybrid perovskite materials (crystals and thin films) with fully characterized material structures (space group, crystallinity, local strain and disorder). The structural information will be used to understand material functionality, such as high energy photon absorption, carrier transport, doping concentration, bulk and surface defect, etc.
We therefore encourage qualified candidates who are interested and have had experience with hybrid perovskite material synthesis to apply. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to both the materials growth and structure characterization. Focused topics will include: 1) systematic growth of hybrid perovskite crystals and thin films with designed compositions; 2) basic characterization of crystal structures, crystallography, defect density and surface properties; 3)novel hybrid perovskite structure design and new synthetic approaches for materials growth to improve absorption and carrier transport properties; 4) understand the structure-function relationships to build the design principles for next generation detectors. Beyond those subjects, novel hybrid perovskite structures and properties may be explored, such as ultra-fast structure dynamics and its impact on the electronic properties of the material to advance detection properties, as well as new structure designs to enable highly efficient carrier transport under high fields (electric or magnetic) to achieve new detection mechanisms.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
The ideal candidate will have a strong background and demonstrated hands-on experience in material synthesis and crystal structure characterization:
Hybrid perovskite single crystal growth and solution processed thin film growth
Structure characterization and basic crystal structure analysis
New hybrid perovskite structure design and synthesis
Capability of building novel crystal growth setup
Knowledge of structural characterization using X-ray diffraction, electron-microscopy, X-ray fluorescence, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, NMR
Demonstrated capability in experimental parameter design and systematic optimizations.
Demonstrated experience in conducting original scientific research through peer reviewed publication record.
Basic knowledge on optical measurements (absorption, photoluminescence)
Excellent communication skills (both oral and written)
Willingness to travel to other user facilities in the US to conduct experiments.
Demonstrated ability to work independently and with minimum supervision.
Ability to adapt to new requirements for projects and be flexible enough to learn new areas of research as needed.
Able to work effectively as a part of a team in a multi-disciplinary environment and interact effectively with people with a variety of expertise
A PhD in Applied Physics or related fields, completed within the last five years or soon to be completed.
