What You Will Do

The Safeguards - Nuclear Material Control and Accountability Group (SAFE-NMCA) is looking for an energetic, experienced, customer-focused professional to fulfill various nuclear material control and accountability (NMCA) duties and responsibilities. As a Nuclear Material Accountant, you will contribute to LANL’s National Security mission by helping to ensure compliance with DOE/NNSA requirements. Additionally, you will be responsible for providing nuclear material accountability support including comprehensive accounting analysis, reporting of nuclear inventory data, identifying inventory issues, and making recommendations for the resolution of issues.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Experience in at least one of the following areas: Accounting, nuclear measurement instruments and methods, nuclear safeguards, security management, nuclear facility operations, production control, production operations, or chemical/industrial operations.

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with the use of automated inventory, accounting software or use of large-scale database systems.

  • Demonstrated experience making decisions and resolving problems as a team member, using judgement, creativity, flexibility and initiative to determine an approach or action to take in non-routine situations.

  • Skill to conceptualize and communicate major elements of nuclear materials accountability to both technical and non‐technical personnel, as demonstrated through clear, concise and effective verbal and written communication skills.

  • In‐depth problem solving skills, analytical skills and the ability to execute accounting decisions consistent with MCA regulatory drivers and/or generally accepted accounting principles.

  • Extensive experience with Microsoft Excel for report generation, presentation, and trending.

Education/Experience: Position requires an Associate’s Degree and 6 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience directly related to the occupation. Additional consideration may be given to professionally recognized training and certifications in related fields.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Advanced knowledge of LANL MC&A requirements as outlined in the LANL Nuclear Material Control and Accountability Plan (NMCA-PROG-FSD-001).

  • Working knowledge of LANMAS transactions, including mix and split, containerization, updating items after measurement, editing, etc. to ensure compliance with DOE/NNSA requirements.

  • Understanding of nuclear material data, inventory support, related safeguards inquiries, and other components of the NMCA program.

  • Knowledge of off-site shipping and receiving of nuclear material.

  • Experience communicating components of nuclear materials accountability to both technical and non-technical personnel.

  • Knowledge of waste related transactions.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements

  • for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. SeeDOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
