What You Will Do
Prototype Fabrication Manufacturing Group (PF-MFG) is seeking qualified Machinists that will provide advanced machining support for the fabrication of components both in a classified and unclassified environment in support of a variety of key laboratory missions. The machinist will be required to work from complex drawings, sketches, CAD models, and/or verbal instructions to facilitate the manufacture of parts and assemblies by programming, setting up, and operating manual and CNC mills and lathes, EDM and a variety of general machine shop tooling. They will manufacture complex parts made from different materials with exacting tolerances.
Selected candidates will work in a team environment to provide fabrication services for a variety of customers both internal and external to the Laboratory related to nuclear weapons programs.

Drawings & Specifications
Ability to read and interpret complex drawings and sketches which use Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) symbols to determine design factors such as size, shape, position and arrangement of features and parts comprising assemblies. Must have working experience analyzing and troubleshooting customer provided drawings and providing recommendations for revision to ensure manufacturability.
Advanced ability to create 3D models using CAD software and the corresponding tool paths using CAM software along with advanced knowledge of G&M Codes. You must be able to apply this knowledge to produce parts using conventional, CNC (to include 4 and 5 axis work) and advanced manufacturing techniques for parts with a high degree of difficulty and tight tolerances, typically +/- .0005. Skilled knowledge of applied mathematics and proficiency in determining machining processes, tools, and operations to obtain various tolerances is required. You must have advanced knowledge in applied material properties, be willing to work with classified, and have experience working with hazardous materials.
Demonstrated ability to maintain and grow excellent customer relations through good verbal and written communication skills. You must also be able to create assembly models, manufacturing drawings or sketches for the production of hardware along with working experience analyzing and troubleshooting customer provided drawings and working one-one with the customer to provide recommendations for revision to ensure manufacturability.
Dimensional Inspection Knowledge
Advanced ability to perform precision measurements on parts using inspection tools such as calipers, micrometers, verniers, and others.
Tools & Operating Knowledge
Ability to operate manual and powered lifting equipment/ devices.
Communication, Teamwork and Safety
Demonstrated effectiveness in communication and teaming with peers, customers, and technicians as appropriate to achieve or negotiate work requirements. At this level you must have the ability to effectively supervise the work of other machinists and maintain a safe work posture in a machine shop environment. Experience implementing policies and procedures for working safely in an industrial manufacturing environment.
Education & Years of Experience: Position requires a high school diploma or equivalent AND Accredited journey-person qualification with a minimum six years of related experience OR program qualified equivalency consisting of 20 years of diverse machining experience with 10 years of Laboratory job-related experience; 2 years of technical interpretation and execution of project work; customer interface and consultation experience. Certificate or associates degree preferred.
Additional Tools & Systems : CAD/CAM experience, preferably SolidWorks/CAMWorks and CREO.
Certifications : RADWORKER training and certification.
Classified Materials Machining and Hazardous Materials Machining to include experience with machining materials having RAD, toxic, pyrophoric, explosive, and/or other hazardous characteristics.
Supervisory experience in a machine shop environment.
Clearance: DOE Q Clearance highly desirable

Candidates selected for interview should be prepared to describe the difficulty, materials and tolerances of recently completed fabrication work. Interviews for this position will include a proficiency “segment” in which applicants will be asked to review and comment on actual fabrication drawings, describing the approach and/or potential difficulties, and describing inspection and measurement techniques needed. The candidate will also be asked to identify typical maintenance needs, and describe safe work practices in a machine shop environment.
Evaluation of applicants will commence immediately. Qualified applicants will be invited for an interview on April 7 or April 8, 2021. Location: This position will be physically located in Los Alamos.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
