Los Alamos National Laboratory Lead Machine Design, Installation and Maintenance Technologist (Research Technologist 1/2) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Research Technologist 1 or Research Technologist 2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

The High Explosives (HE) Fabrication and Disposition Group (M-8) in the Dynamic Experiments (M) Division is seeking a qualified Research Technologist that will lead the research, design, installation, modification, repair and ongoing preventative maintenance of industrial fabrication equipment used to press, machine and inspect HE. The successful candidate will have advanced technical skills supporting the design and implementation of complex equipment including the following system components: electrical, mechanical, pneumatics, vacuum, pressure systems, safety interlock and other critical system components that are critical to high consequences of safety. Being a technical expert in all system components is essential to the successful implementation of highly specialized equipment that essential to safe operations. Job specific training will be provided. You will bring a diverse skillset and lead the collaboration with internal and external stakeholders on a daily basis.

Research Technologist 1 ($77,300 - $126,000)

The successful candidate will:

  • Work from electrical schematics and mechanical drawings to install custom equipment within an HE environment

  • Work with the group ESO to ensure electrical safety throughout the entire facility

  • Lead preventative and corrective maintenance activities of custom manufacturing equipment

  • Troubleshoot machine installations to validate proper machine operations

  • Work on equipment used for fabrication of hazardous materials, typically high explosives.

  • Acquire and maintain pertinent certifications and qualifications to support installation and maintenance of equipment.

  • Occasional overtime may be required.

Research Technologist 2 ($85,400 - $139,600)

In addition to the duties outlined above, the Research Technologist 2 will be required to:

  • Design custom electrical and mechanical systems to support HE machining operations

  • Assist in defining facility modifications necessary to support new equipment installations

  • Assist in developing specifications for vendor supplied custom equipment to support hazardous fabrication activities

  • Train and mentor other employees.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Extensive knowledge and experience working safely with electrical equipment powered by 480VAC and 208VAC facility power.

  • Demonstrated advanced experience fabricating, assembling, and testing electronic, electrical, hydraulic and mechanical systems.

  • Demonstrated advanced experience performing installation, maintenance, and repairs on complex equipment and systems.

  • Demonstrated proficiency and efficiency with oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to work with a diverse team of professional technicians supporting multiple concurrent team tasks with changing programmatic priorities.

  • Demonstrated record of dependability, reliability, and commitment to long-term needs of the job duties and programmatic goals of the position and organization.

  • Ability to work a 4 day per week, 10 hour per day work schedule

Additional Job Requirements for Research Technologist 2:

In addition to the Job Requirements outlined above, qualification at the Research Technologist 2 level requires:

  • Demonstrated ability to create mechanical or electrical schematics with Autocad or similar CAD programs.

  • Expert knowledge and experience designing electronic, electrical and mechanical systems.

  • Expert knowledge and experience in maintaining system and process documentation.

  • Expert knowledge of PLC control implementation and modifications

  • Ability to be a technical leader within the organization, including training and mentoring other employees.

Education and Experience Required for Level 1: Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution and 2 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education and Experience Required for Level 2: Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution and 5 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • LANL Electrical Safety Officer qualified

  • Experience leading the specification and installation of custom industrial equipment used in high hazard environments

  • Experience in the maintenance of manual and CNC machining equipment

  • Programming experience with PLCs or LabVIEW

Location: This position will be located in Los Alamos, NM.

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements

  • for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. SeeDOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
