What You Will Do

This job posting is for 1 (one) postdoctoral position in the Geophysics Group (EES-17). EES-17 performs research and development nonlinear acoustics, seismology, geology and geodynamics. In particular we do theoretical, modeling, and experimental work to improve our capabilities for computing solutions to address challenges in dynamic response of rock material resulting from explosive and hydraulic stresses, earthquake hazards, treaty verification, clean energy development, environmental management, nuclear waste disposal, and resource extraction impacts. The Group is characterized by a balance of basic and applied research, which leads to the development of novel and integrated capabilities that are then utilized to address practical problems for sponsors in multiple offices in DOE, other federal agencies, and a variety of industries.

EES-17 is looking for a creative postdoctoral to join our interdisciplinary team. The successful candidate will take a role in algorithm development and numerical modeling of above ground high explosive detonations with particular emphasis on fluid-structure interaction, shock modeling (both through air and ground media) and seismic wave propagation. Experience with numerical modeling (e.g. finite element, finite difference, discrete elements) for simulating response of metals and geomaterials at various stress regimes is desired. Beyond expertise in damage mechanics, a successful applicant will also have a solid understanding of shock physics, plasticity, and mesoscale behavior in rocks. Candidates should also have significant code development experience and an understanding of computational methods used at the continuum and discontinuum levels (i.e., Combined Finite-Discrete Element Method, Discrete Element Method, Finite Element Method, etc.). This position will require motivation to succeed in an independent work environment and also the communication skills to interact with a multidisciplinary, integrated team. The successful applicant will have an excellent publication record in the field of Computational Mechanics or related areas; the selected person will be expected to conduct research independently, publish results in peer-reviewed journals and present at well-known conferences.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • A background in constitutive model formulation, and knowledge of shock physics and fluid dynamics.

  • Prior research experience in one or more of the following: continuum mechanics, damage and fracture mechanics, or continuum and discontinuum scale computational modeling methods

  • Experience with shock wave propagation modeling in fluids and/or solids.

  • Knowledge of mechanical behavior of rocks under extreme loading conditions

  • Proficiency in Fortran, C, C++, or Python

  • Excellent written and communication skills

  • Ability to obtain a Q Clearance which requires US Citizenship

Education/Experience :A PhD in Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Solid Mechanics, or closely related fields is highly preferred.For a postdoctoral appointmentthe candidate must have completed all Ph.D. requirements by commencement of the appointment and must be within five years of completion of the Ph.D.

Where You Will Work

The mission of the Earth and Environmental Sciences (EES) Division of Los Alamos National Laboratory is to solve complex problems of importance in environment, energy, and national security by using our capabilities in earth and environmental sciences. The division is a highly interactive, well-funded research organization with an annual budget of approximately $100 million and a staff of approximately 240. The core disciplines of EES Division include Geology, Geochemistry, Geophysics, Geodynamics, Geography, Hydrology, Atmospheric Science, Ecology, Environmental Science, Computational Science and Geotechnical Engineering.
