Los Alamos National Laboratory IT Manager 2 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The Network and Infrastructure Engineering- (NIE-CS) Core Services group is looking for an experienced, highly motivated team leader to manage the Production Control team and Data Center Management team. The selected candidate will have a customer focused approach to a team that provides 24/7 computer operations support for the LANL. The team provides three shifts on a 5x24 schedule, Monday through Friday, in addition to on-call support during weekends and holidays. The support includes job scheduling, systems monitoring and alerting, backup tape processing, and first level support for ADBI customers. The team monitors systems utilizing diagnostic tests, system messages and scripts as well as responds to error messages, systems crashes, equipment failures, and user concerns. The Data Center Management team is custodians for 5 data centers including 2 VTR’s. The team is in charge of all work within the data centers. They manage training, access, racking/stacking servers, salvage, facility coordination, and running network cables. The team leader will be responsible for workload distribution.

As the Production Control Team Leader, responsibilities include:

  • Providing technical and administrative leadership of a team of technicians in the daily operations of the LANL’s complex business processing environment

  • Establishing and maintaining guidelines/policies/procedures for daily operations

  • Maintaining on-call schedules and procedures

  • Establishing training plans for team members and development of junior technicians

  • Collaborating with other NIE teams to research solutions for complex problems that span multiple disciplines, including hardware, software development, systems programming, data management, security, networking, telecommunications, or related disciplines

  • Collaborating with other NIE teams to integrate strategic thinking in the formulation of solutions and capabilities to ensure that long-term business objectives and impacts are met

As the Data Center Management Team Leader, responsibilities include:

  • Report efficiency metrics to DOE eDARS system

  • Coordinate work with running network cables and server installations

  • Maintain data integrity for Data Center Inventory Management system

  • Administer Keywatcher systems for the data centers

  • Understand electrical capacities within the data center

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated experience in leading a team/organization in all aspects of organizational management, capability and staff development, performance and salary management

  • Experience applying project management principles to set project scope, schedule, priorities, and deliverables

  • Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication skills in order to interact with system administrators, database administrators, programmers and customers

  • Demonstrated experience with multiple employee notification system management

  • Demonstrated experience with batch scheduling jobs of various environments and manipulating job streams

  • Demonstrated experience to logically problem solve to schedule jobs with complicated schedules

  • Knowledge of and experience with Datacenter operations.

  • Proven ability to manage 24X7 operations

  • Ability to lift 30+ pounds

Education/Experience:

Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems or related field from an accredited institution and 3 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with an enterprise scale job-scheduling package with preference to Control-M suite of products.

  • Basic knowledge and understanding of UNIX, LINUX and Microsoft computer operating systems.

  • Familiarity with tools used for mass notification (Everbridge/ServiceNow Ticketing system).

  • Familiarity with network cables, connections, and peripherals.

  • Understanding of data center efficiency or PUE.

  • Knowledge of IT governance frameworks such as ITIL, DevSecOps, etc

  • Demonstrated experience in formal incident management

  • Active DOE Q clearance

Location: This position will be part of the Laboratory’s Telework Pilot and may work from a remote/home location within a two-hour ground commute of the Laboratory. The Telework Pilot is in effect from Oct. 1, 2020 through Sept. 30, 2021, but may be shortened or extended at the manager’s discretion. Ability to report on-site is a must for this position.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 .
